How often do you guys max out and about what are your average gains?

I last maxed out 4 months ago and am about to next week and expect to add about 20 pounds to my bench sqt and dl.

You're so full of shit. You update your bench press 1RM like it's your job.

Anyway, how frequently you can and should max out depends on your training age, goals, type of training you do, etc. Those who follow the Westside template perform two 1RM exercises a week, though they vary frequently to prevent nervous system overload.

I dont think I have ever maxed out - I gain progressively during my training so I've never really thought about it - is it that important?
I'm 34 - when am I officially an old fart?

Really, it's not necessary at all. Even if you want to gain strength, there are ways of implementing maximal effort training without ever going balls to the wall. For example, you could do 5 singles with 90% of your 1RM, resting in between for 60 seconds or more. This would still constitute heavy training, but without reaching failure.
