Isnt it something to do with 'cocking it' - when you draw the forearm up to the shoulder to show off the bicep? - I know in boxing they refer to 'having the right arm cocked ready to unleash the...' cross, hook or whatever... maybe thats it?

I'm 34 - when am I officially an old fart?

I don't think you should try to take the analogy that literally. It's just that the biceps are the epitome of weightlifters. Hence they get a 'cool nickname'. You could find the resemblance in 'the things you shoot with' or 'the barrels sticking out of your t-shirt' maybe.

Guns probably got it's start in the military from the guys who lug the larger weapons and worked it's way from there. Just a guess though. Don't know if you could really trace its origin.

As a side note: Wasn't it Hulk Hogan who coined the term pythons?

Because in a fist fight they are your weapons, or at least they appear to be, and they may very well be if you don't know how to throw a good punch. Maybe? Dunno really...

Well if you've ever held a rifle before in "shooting position", you'd know that your biceps become a very noticable muscle, since the position is similar to a hammer curl. Where as triceps are more visible when holding a pistol, since generally your arms are straighter and tighter to resist the "kick-back" of the pistol. Hence their reference as "guns". That's my guess.
