    a) work on your running mechanics

    b) work on your base strength levels

    c) can someone move this to training?

I always notice that my running speed is based on how much I ate on the day.

Train for power and endurance, not for hyperthrophy.

A high school coach observed me sprinting in gym class many years ago. He noted, "you could be a pretty good sprinter if you worked on your mechanics." I was feeling "full of myself" and thinking about joining the track team. Shortly after, a small thin black guy blew past me in a 50 meter. Beat me by almost full second. No amount of training would ever make me run that fast!

    I bought a bicycle.

So, you thought with a couple of weeks of sprint training you would be able to compete with someone who had probably been doing it for years? If you are not willing to put forth the time and effort to be great, you never will.

must have a solid foundation of strength before you can meet your true power potential. Strength and power are not the same...but, the qualities help to enhance each other.

easy on the endurance. you get what you train for (SAID principle) and a 1600m is more like a mid distance sprint these days.

    No Dale.

Like Clint Eastwood said, "a man's got to know his limits." I was not a sprinter.

Most men don't have 14" peckers. Only a fool would workout his 6 inches believing he could become a horse.

Actually, my pecker's a stiff 8.75", though it salutes a little to the left. I lay a few inches further to the left, nobody notices.

Damn, I stopped having sex because I'm so absorbed in my conviction to being a half-assed 50-year old bodybuilder.

Mabry, don't try to make me something I'm not!

I bet if that black dude was chasing you with a knife to cut your dick off you would have found a way to run faster than him.

If a thousand Mabrys (that looked like your avatar) were throwing spears at my butt... I couldn't have run any faster - I swear!

Exactly. Developing power is capped by your maximal force output. If improving power is about improving the rate at which you can develop force, then your theoretical maximum for developing force in a given time period is going to be your maximum force output. So, you have to improve that peak force output to improve the rate of force generation. Also, the stronger you are, the easier it is going to be to maintain a given force output because the intensity will be reduced.

Push full on sprint training. Run full out with very exacting demands on HOW you run. Just going out running doesn't increase speed ... changing the way you run improves your ability while full out sprints increase your bodies ability to use that improvement.

Check out the local high school track coach. If you're polite he might give you a lil' track 101. LOL ... just makes sure the track teams wins a few.

exactly. if you want sprint speed, why would you run for miles? you would work on your sprints.

Here's what I would do to increase sprint speed:

-Continue to train my legs like crazy (for strength).
-Sprint uphill for as long as possible, perhaps three or four times per session.
-Record my results to see whether it's doing anything.
-Work on the biomechanics of sprinting to make sure I'm doing it as efficiently as possible.
-If I had a set distance over which I wanted to improve sprint time, I'd sprint for a distance as close to that distance as possible.
Push yourself. Enjoy yourself. Be yourself.
Knowledge is power. Obsessed with functional strength. Journal

Because running for 3 miles a day is very different from sprinting. You are going to have to sprint if you want to get faster.
