    knee pain in squat

    Hello,

    I'm lifting for 2 years and I have a problem with squat, In the past I did wide(sumo) squat and I never have any knee pain with heavy weight(like 200kg), a trainer told me that if I'll do the squat narrow the Quadriceps will be the dominant.

    So I turn to narrow squat, I keep always the back erect the the movement start from the buttocks, I tried the squat in barbell and with smith machine - the pain is the same, I even reduced the weight to 100kg - didn't helped well.

    The pain is hard when after the squat I do the leg extension.

    I tried to move to static lunges(in smith machine and with dumbells), the the pain in the knees is greater than the squat.

    What can I do about that?

    I've been thru the knee pains too. My knee was so bad at one time I couldn't even bend it at all. First thing I did was do them w/o the smith machine after enough time resting the knee until I could start doing them again with light weight building back up to heavier weights. Proper warm up and stretching helped out too. See a Dr. if it persist. I was close to doing that but it got better on it's own.

    Don't squat on the smith machine, and don't do leg extensions. They are both lovely generators shearing knee forces.

    Don't do anything that hurts it period.

    You may consider getting it checked out by a doctor if it continues to bother you. Getting a good personal trainer to do a movement assessment of you might be helpful as well.
    The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

    QFT: Never use the smith machine for those movements.

    Thanks for the replys,

    I worked with a trainer alone on the squat, he told me that my technique is good and there shouldn't any problem.

    I tried to do the squat with smith machine, because I want to see if there isn't any pain on the knees, but there is a pain.

    Before the weight training, I always do an aerobic training for 10mins in low heart rate (about 120) and do stretch well.

    Someone told me that I should use knee straps, but I don't know if will help.

    What kind of credentials does this trainer have? I know a lot of trainers that couldn't tell you a bad squat if the person did it standing on his head.
    The only time it's bad to feel the burn is when you're peeing...

    I agree with you, but the two guys who saw me they have experience in training and before I met them, my technique was bad, now it's better and I can say good, one of them told me that he thinks I put too much weight on the barbell that's why it cause the knee problem.

    I don't think so that is the problem, because I used to do squat with 200kgs and I didn't feel any pain, the pain begun when I started to insert the abdomen, to take care that the back will be straight, to ensure that the movement will start from the buttocks and not from the legs and look up when I do the exercise. That's why I reduce the weight from 200kgs to 100kgs.

    If I'll do leg press instead leg extension?

    Since you had no problems when you did a sumo squat I'm guessing that your knees are now going past your toes during the narrow squat. It's hard to extend your knees over your toes during a sumo squat without losing balance or wrecking your crotch but very easy to do in a narrow squat (wrecking your knees).

    Your knees should NOT go past your toes at anytime during a narrow squat or any squat for that matter.

    happens all the time in front squats. Happens all the time in olympic back squats....happens in running....happens walking lunges.

    Actually, they research shows that if the toes don't go past the toes, the pressure on the lower back is greatly increased.

    You are right but (I think) so am I. I was reffering to the original poster, not squatting in general, my mistake for not making that clear.

    So what should I do? what is the magic formula to do squat well without pain in the knees and to keep the back straight?
