One of the powerlifters I train with herniated 3 disks in his spine back in March... He was only out of the gym for ~3-4 weeks. In October (7 months later), he squatted 666, bench 450, and deadlifted ~560 at a meet (in the 198lbs class). What exactly is wrong with your back? Even if you have to use a belt to be able to squat, I'd say it's worth it. Make sure to do plenty of lower back/post chain movements: hypers, reverse hypers, glute ham raises, romanian deadlifts etc. Have you tried building up strength in your lower back at all? |

I use to have back trouble, but if anything, proper squats as helped it. The whole back thing is used way to often as an excuse to be a pussy and only work upper body.

However, with the proper guidance (which I don't have right now for fixing back fuckery) and exercise, it might be possible to work through this. I just haven't put forth the effort. Way back in highschool when I was squatting for track/cross country, I was in pain. And said, "fuck it!" Never really thought about going back because I've only gotten older since then... Also, I have to consider what purpose squats serve for me. I ride a single speed (for those who know about gear ratios, its 52x13) in lieu of my car (which is in storage) everywhere. I swim, run, play recreational sports. So my legs are strong, and I don't need to have big muscles down there. They need endurance and enough strength to do what I ask them to. So far, they've done a good job. |

How so? Would you like me to fit into the normal stereotype of fat America?
![]() I've always been skinny, barely 100 entering highschool, barely 130 exiting. Last summer I got myself up to around 155, my heaviest weight to date, with protein supplementing my diet. I still have a scoop or two per day, depending on what I've had to eat, but not as much as before. I eat very healthy, but am going to admit a little more food probably wouldn't hurt if I wanted to gain some weight. However, I don't really know if I want to. Oh well. |

I normally start off with two bowls of Kashi Go Lean, very high in protein and fiber. The good stuff that keeps me poopin'! Sometimes tasty oatmeal if the office is cold. Mid morning banana, maybe an apple. Lunch normally consists of a nice sammich, normally turkey, but sometimes chicken breast, and some raw veggies. If the soup is good, I'll have some of that. But not normally, since it's loaded with salt and other less than desirable items. I love milk, so I'll have a little carton of 2% over ice to wash it down. Cold milk > not cold milk. Afternoons are a tossup. It may be a protein shake, maybe granola bar. I also have a few cut up veggies to munch on throughout the afternoon. Dinner is also a tossup between some chicken and pasta dish with veggies and these hella tasty frozen dinners from Seeds of Change. I normally chase those about an hour later with a protein drink. I also normally have one of the Clif Bar Builder Bars sometime during the day. 20g protein and some other nice stuff.
I used to eat more fish, but have fallen out of that in recent months. I love the quality salmon from the healthy food store. I need to go shopping this weekend, maybe I'll get some then. I think that's healthy eating... |

You're not big, but you look like you're healthy and lean. Understand that this is a bodybuilding forum though; what people consider sw0le here, is pretty fucking big.
That rock climbing is pretty cool too. I think climbing is badass. Getting a lot bigger isn't going to help you there, heh. |
