I've always used a barbell. I'd imagine that the barbell would implement more use of other muscles to help stablelize the movement.
Are bent over rows using dumbells as effective as they are using barbells?

I use dumbells at the moment and it feels pretty much the same in terms of difficulty, and gives the same results as using a barbell.
If theres any differences theyre so small its not worth worrying about. As long as good form is kept, and you use full ROM it shouldnt be an issue.

That's funny this post came up, because I just did Bent over rows with Dumbells last night and really liked it. I like it because you can pull them back a little further with out the bar hitting your stomach or chest. Not too mention the bar possibly catching your knees (depending on your structure), and I felt a little more stable because of the center of gravity. Whatever, just my thoughts.

byt the way that was a good thread .. i'll try db bent over rows as soon as i could...

I've always done them with dumbbells up until last week when I switched to barbells, just to change things up a little bit really.

I cheat myself by only using T-Bar rows. I really need to start using dumbells for rows.

Perhaps not. While one arm is working, the other is holding you up. During barbell rows, both arms are working, so your core is stabilizing alone.
As far as the thread goes, I like DBs more than Barbells and I have never known why. Oh it gets worse. I like Yates rows over Barbell Rows, but not over DB rows. However, I know DBs have their limits in their own weight, so barbells would have to be used eventually.
