Working Out glossary + a couple questions.

Hi,

I havent been around so much, too occupied but been following my workouts daily. Now, As i work out and realize things, i memorize them for times like this to get to ask you professionals.
Now, the other day, I walked in a conversation of my school athlete teacher(the fitness room supervisor). She was telling a student that:
- Not possible to gain size and definition at the same time.
- Any sort of supplements or Protein shakes are just "watery" it will "make u look good for that moment, then later on you are back to normal".
now this one is im really curious of:
- "If some weights you can only do upto 4 reps . Then dont, it will hurt your height badly." -- In P/RR/S the exercises are in first week for 4-6 reps.

Those are things i noticed her state to me. Now i've seen different answers in this board, what do you guys say to that?

As for Glossary, Im just trying to collect all those big body words and memorize them. I so far got a few:
- Compound exercises
- superset/dropset (not hard but ya)
- (crap i forgot this one while writing the previous one...)

I am definatly no profesional, but I'm pretty sure that different rep ranges have different effects, eg, low heavy reps for strength and size, and light high reps for endurance?

As for the supplements remark, there are a lot of crap money spinning piles of junk out there, but then there are some genuin supplements that do help you on your way to accomplishing your goals.

I know this is a vaig answer to your question but like I said I am no expert.

I would say this school athelete teacher is a dumbass.

1. Size and definition at the same time? Of course its possible, its all dependent upon the ratio of muscle:fat that you are gaining, which is dependent upon your diet. I would say it also depends on your bodytype and current status, but for a 130lb newbie at 8% bodyfat, if he/her were to gain 20 lbs of LBM, he would obviously gain size and would appear more defined. (Just an example)

2. This second statement is pretty dumb. Maybe she was getting confused with steroids? If you suddenly stopped taking protein suppliments, as long as you are still eating enough high quality protein sources then nothing is going to happen to your gains (providing your still training)

3. I cannot see the logic in 4 or less reps affecting your height in anyway, did she even mention for what excersizes? or just 4 reps in general?

Unless anyone else here can provide any evidence on the subject I would say she is talking rubbish

I'm not sure it was a dumb comment, perhaps inccorect, but from a teachers point of view to a 17yr old, there's probably reasons behind them...

If you stopped taking supplements after months of training and dieting surely your body would lose shape and you'd likely pack on weight? water retention blah etc etc. Obviously this is hypothetical with which type of supplement and your diet and training had not changed.

Well if were talking about other supplements (creatine or whatever) then if you were to stop using these I think it may slow your gains down, but as long as your are still training consistently and your diet is good there is no reason at all why it would make you loose any of your gains. Protein supplements are generally just a convenient way of getting more protein, although there is a benefit of having whey protein, as long as you were still getting your daily protein intake then stopping using it would have no ill effects on your gains.

Sorry for not replying, I got occupied during exams and work.

Well, she is a pretty smart actually, but sometimes she is a real dumbass. I told her i take Whey in the morning with breakfast, she says thats not as good as everyone may think..

I think its because my gym is full of fat lard asses, she is probably giving me the same speech as she gives them.

if you took steroids and stopped taking them but kept working out, youd deflate, no?
