    One arm pushups

Ok, so I know that one arm pushups dont really serve much purpose apart from to show off, but can anyone do these and how would you go about working towards doing them if you currently cant do any?

    Yes.
If you can't do any do narrow grip pushups and strap pushups- all kinds of pushups really- they take a lot of core strength.
Doing one arm pushups with your torso elevated is a great way to start. The easiest being leaning against the wall. Then move to a slant board (used for sit ups)

Thanks Bakerboy i'll have to try that.

Danny: How would they be any more effective for muscle stamina than normal pushups? for a start you wont be able to do as many and secondly they are only really working one side of the body, no?

Start with normal pushups and in each phase intensify the movement. Then progressively remove one arm from the work.

Personally they fucked up my elbows. Just a warning!

Id just progressively overload regular pushups (elevated feet, added weight), and gradually work up to doing one armed pushups with your legs spread really wide, and eventually close the gap between them untill you have them perfect.

One arm pushups are pretty technical, when done right they are alot easier than you think.

Before I knew what I was doing I could do maybe 2 forced reps with my right arm and none with my left, after i found out how to perform them I banged out 5 each arm with plenty to spare.

Bad form = fucked up elbows and wrists

I could do something like 5-8 with each arm, but not very well, obviously :P.

Single arm bench pressing might also help now that i think of it.

When you get into position, make sure your tight. Tighten up the glutes, and your midsection. Tighten up your lat, keep your arm close to your body. On the way down and up, think of your arm as a corkscrew. Twist your body down and up, but keep your arm planted in the same position throughout the movement. It is more of a mental thing than anything.

The key is staying tight. Make sure its a shallow breath your holding in otherwise your face will turn red

If your interested in bodyweight stuff like this you should check out the Naked Warrior by Pavel, both in book and DVD
