    Help Needed!

Ok, I was mostly focusing on cardio training with a backburner of weight trining in the beginning. I have since then lost a good 60lbs of fat. I still want to do cardio but there is only one problem, the Eliptical machine I bought, frigg'n broke. The bolt just snapped that hlds the leg to the wheel. I guess I got alittle to focused and went too hard. Anyway, this happened about a week ago. So what I have been doing is ANYTHING to keep me moving between sets of weights on lifting day (MWF). On non lifting days (Tues, Thurs, and Saturday) I do 50 - 60 minutes of various full body workouts. Push ups, sit ups, crunches, jumping jacks, squats (no weight), sprints, etc etc.

Is this ok? My body definitely feels like it is getting a good workout and I am leaning out nicely. My goals are a lean and defined body, not strength and big muscle. Thanks for any input ahead of time.
After almost 2 weeks... I am back and better than ever.

I find Eliptical machines boring. The scenery does'nt change, and time drags.

Why not grab a cheap but decent pair of running shoes and go outside for a run? Works wonders for me, I do 5 miles on non-lifting days. (with Sunday off). Even if it's cold out. Running in cold is reputed to torch 12% more calories & 32% more fat than running in warm weather. - menshealth.

Ellipticals are far better because it eliminates impact force.

Good way to wear out the cartilidge in your joints as well as connective tissue. I wouldn't recommend running on pavement to a client unless he played a sport or willing to do intense running (less than one mile).

If you do run, don't do a lot of miles. Do a variation of HIIT. Sprinting is a great method of raising metabolic rate and getting rid of flab.

The affects of long distance running done frequently WILL materialize in older age.

Replace the bolt? Don't mean to be captain obvious here ABC ... sorry. I am meaning to say you have a system that works for you so try to keep it working. If you can't fix it then run an ad in www.craigslist.com and someone will come fix it for you.

Not everyone's joints go to shit from road work, but if you don't do it properly you'll prolly suffer. Fix your machine is my advice. You checked out the warranty I'm wondering?

Yeah, I jsut needed a trainign schedule until I get it fixed. Luckily I live right across the street from the parks lining the river between Manhattan and Brooklyn. It has miles of pavement where you can go running or biking so I ran, jogged, walked, for a good 40 minutes. Hopefully next week I will have the eliptical fixed and go back to my training schedule. Quick question though, is the schedule I am on ok? That isn't overworking myself, is it?

Pretty much the same as mine. 3 Days lifting, 3 Days Cardio. Should be good for your goals. I can handle quite alot of punishment, but am always looking for signs of overtraining. As long as you get good nutrition and quality rest, should be fine. Just my 2 cents.

Yeah my diet is pretty spot on and I almost always get 8 hours of sleep. If I feel my body needs more rest though, I will take it easy on Saturdays and i always give myself Sundays to completely rest... and of course have my one cheat meal for the week. On that note, can't wait for tomorrow.

You could buy a watch with a bulit-in heart rate monitor and do your running in the grass. Impact is far less than the pavement and it's nice to change things up. I run sprints outside in the grass about once a week and results are great. 15-20 60yrd sprints with a 30sec RI (basically a slow in-place jogg). None the less, you do need to fix your machine and make that your main cardio source.

Good to hear you are doing well on your cut. Personally I would do the jogging and sprints. Other exercises that are good would be pushups (but don't go overboard if you are still lifting), plymetrics, and jumproping.

Grass, in New York City? Are you mad man? Seriously though, there is a shitload of parks across the way but I will stick to the pavement until I get the machine fixed.

Kentdog, thanks man. Yeah I seem to be hanging around the 200 mark (down from a fat ASS 260) but even though the scale isn't moving much, I am significantly slimming down. My core is starting to shine through and my muscles are finally showing some nice definition so I am being patient and continue to work hard.

Johnyork, I was thinking of picking up a bike in the summer for exercise purposes and to explore my area a bit. Right now it's too cold for all that.

Thanks again guys for the input. I am calling Nordictrack tomorrow to see if they can send out a tech to fix my baby up. Until then it's lifting MWF and cardio/crossfit TTS.
