Cardio and a good diet(low carb low-no sugar) if you are trying to bulk up as well then this will be hard because carbs fuel your muscles as well as sugar but if you're just trying to lose weight its all you need

I would continue to lower your BF% to bring those abs out.
A good weight training program, plenty of rest and a good diet are all you need.

Congratulations for getting back into the gym, after a twenty year layoff.

In the past 20 odd years sit-ups have gone by the wayside, however, crunches are just what your looking for.

Although as everyone has said, diet will help you see your abs, but with such a long rest i'd say they need some strengthening work, badly.

Start off with crunches, some leg raises and spend some time each day just simply 'sucking in your guts' to build up some core strength and improve your posture.

Getting your abs/mid section strong will go a long way towards improving all of your other weight lifting efforts.

As I'm only new here, I'm sure there might be some pics and/or info on how to perform crunches and the like, right here on this site. Anyone??

    Good luck, Nick.

Well then, a crunch will be preformed as follows ::::

Lay on the floor (on your back) with your feet up on a chair, couch, woman, etc....inhale and then exhale while you bring your shoulders and upper body up off the floor a few inches while raising your hips off the floor too. Bring your hips and upper body together using your abs to crunch them together. Holding that crunch for a second. Inhale on the way down to being flat, then start over.

I've been working out consistently for that last 20 years(weights, boxing, running, etc) and I hurt all the time too....It's just the nature of the game I guess!

"When I use the word intensity I mean the ability to continue past and through the pain barrier where your mind pleads to stop and in fact convinces your body that you have hit failure, but you push through. How far you push through that barrier is the level of intensity with which you train." -- Twin Peak

It's all about diet. They will come out once you lose a few lbs of fat. Do cardio and work you abs 2-3 times a week as well. Good Luck

Nick, y'know what's good to burn fat around the waist, the WEIDER Ab CRUNCH TRAINER II. I got one, what I was doing when I wanted to burn some fat off around my waist last year, was...I used it on no food, say when you feel real empty, and in between training days. It probably won't get you a six pack, but it does help burn the fat, if you keep using it. Don't forget though, no food before hand. Maybe just some skimmed milk, but after a few months you'll notice the fat going.

I used one because I had a back problem and ordinary crunch sit-ups was painful. Well maybe I was doing them wrong, I'm NO expert, but I'm sure if the other advice here doesn't work out, you should try this.

Nick, you might also try buying an exercise video focusing on abdominal training. Tammy-Lee Webbs "abs of steel" series is awesome.

I'm not much for sitting in front of the TV, so a video that you have to work to won't do it for me, but thanks anyway Claudette

NOT TRYING TO SPOT REDUCE JUST TRYING TO WORK EVERYTHING.
THE LAST THING I AM WORRIED ABOUT IS THE ABS. ALTHOUGH IT WOULD BE NICE TO GET THEM BACK INTO SHAPE.

Nick, the weider ab crunch trainer is a bit hard to describe. I'm pretty sure if you use google to search WEIDER AB CRUNCH TRAINER you'll find all the info you want. They sell them in a lot of mail order catalogues etc, and I thought they were bogus until I saw them being used in a proper gym. You can get cheap versions of it, but don't get one of those.

    Re: Help

    Two questions;
Why are you starting back up after 20 years- and why did you
    quit 20 years ago?
You said you are coming back to the gym after 20 years
and you don't know what a crunch is?
Okay anyhow the first thing I would recommend for you
is this; do some deep breathing all the way down to your
stomach to relax the muscles (ab muscles) you have to
stretch your abs as with any other muscle, by stretching
your abs it is going to be much easier to work on it....
Good luck and keep up the good work!
