I want to to try lap band surgery…

I weigh about 285 lbs and I am 5’11”. I am sick of being overweight. No dates, no energy to work out, and it is very unhealthy being in my condition. I want to lose at least 60 lbs in about 6 months to a year. I am so desperate that I am willing to resort to lap band surgery, since it has been so successful with most overweight people. I need advice on whether \this is worth it and practical. I am pretty ignorant about the procedure. You can even email me at Rodney_the_king@hotmail.com
    Thanks for your assistance.

What does it matter if you are going to continue to live a lifestyle that put you in that situation to begin with?

I think most people here would advise against such a procedure.

Better improve your lifestyle, especially your diet.

    a) it is just a band-aide for a poor lifestyle. you need to fix the problem.

    b) are you even a candidate for that surgery? It isn't like you just decide. Your doctor decides for you.

    c) how long have you been exercising and eating right?

God knows you wouldnt want to try proper dieting. I lost 130 lbs thru diet and exercise so I don't really have too much respect for people who take the easy way out. If your that desperate to lose fat, then you can find all the info you need right here on the internet to make a healthy lifesytle choice and do it the right way. A helpful hint is to not listen to what most people or tv commercials tell you, they are in it for themselves. Although people don't want to hear it, most women don't know how to diet, if they did, they would all be slim and fit. Most bodybuilders do know how to diet, so listen to them.

Your only 26, come on, I'm 45 and did it. Put down the candy and put on your sneakers and get it done. A year from now you will be stronger, leaner and feel great about yourself. Or you could be going to the doctors office all the time with all the other middle age lazy slugs who have more insurance than will power. I say get out there and sieze the day. There comes a time in every mans life where you have to make a choice. Now is your time.

As well, I lost around 110 lbs through diet and exercise. I never got a surgery or even took a pill. Change your lifestyle. It's the only way to be successful.

I got a buddy who is about your height and weight and he is always up for playing ball and shit like that. But then he goes home pops open a beer and eats a whole pizza. Its very simple; be active and change your eating habits slowly and things fall into place.

just chiming in with more support for exercise and diet first.

285 and standing nearly 6 feet doesn't sound like you're so morbidly obese that surgery would be the only way to go about this.

You have no energy to work out because you are not working out and feeding yourself properly. Once you get those two things in order, the energy will seem to appear as if by magic. If all you can muster when you first start working out is 10-12 minutes of ANYTHING, then that's fine. That's 10-12 minutes of SOMETHING rather than nothing. Build on that.

Just because this is a bodybuilding board, doesn't mean that you have to change overnight your habits and exercise plan to that of someone who has been training for years. You have to start somewhere. Surgery is not a start. Not for you. You are young, and with a little motivation you can make a HUGE change in one single year.

Do you realize how little time ONE YEAR actually is in the grand scheme of things?

Don't sell yourself short. CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE. take it one day at a time, and before you know it, you will be reading this post a year later, and wondering why you ever considered surgery to begin with.

I know you posted this wishing to hear more support and encouragement toward the surgery, but you will find that most of us on this board will instead encourage you to take control of your life and adopt healthier eating and exercise habits.

Sorry bub I can't agree with the surgery route either. I was the king of fast food, smoking, and all things alcohol. I'm involved in the racing industry so often times I find myself at the shop late nights, or on the road. I got up to 268lb at a point, I'm 6'1" BTW. So you could say I'm playing in a similar ball park to you.

I'm now at 234lb, do cardio 4-5 times a week and weight train three days a week. It isn't easy, its not a cake walk. Nobody drags me to the gym and helps me, you either have to help yourself or continue down the dark path. YOU HAVE THE POWER TO CHANGE THIS!!!!!

Now I will say this about the good folks here at IM. They'll give you the weapons to attack the fat via a proper diet and training routine. Its up you however to put them to practice. Best of luck my man, and be sure to start a journal to record your success.
I do my best to focus on the task at hand, and give 100% in what I'm doing at the time. Nothing else matters except the task at hand.
