I don't like them, my back cracks sometimes.
do you do them? Is a broom stick okay or should I have something more weighted?

Don't see the need to do them. What is your goal?
strengthen the muscles surrounding my spine, I've had a lot of back problems for the past year.

I did them for about a year and I have to say I didnt notice any particular benefit. I know its something Stallone advocates but for me I just got bored. I was up to like 600 of them 3 times a week. I think the classic back exercises performed properly (deadlifts, rows etc) will do more for strengthening your back than stick twists will IMO.
I'm 34 - when am I officially an old fart?
axial loading with rotation is the stupidest thing I have heard all week (don't worry though....it is only monday. I am sure that Danny will have this topped in about 4-5 hours).
