    Any experts on Women's training?

My wife is approaching 46 years old and wants to work out. She used to work out years ago and she did alot of walking. She wants me to buy her a Universal type workout system.....she doesn't like my free weights. The problem is I don't know how to train her. She's 5'8" and 120lbs. She doesn't need weight loss, she needs to get some muscle tone back. I'm scared to train her because I don't know how a woman her age should work out. If I make her work too hard it would do more harm than good. Can anybody help?

there is no difference between weight training for men and women...
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

As with any person who is new, you need to start slow and easy. It will take her body 3-4 weeks (sometimes 4-6) to get used to any new movements while lifting. Keep her rep range around 15-20 for any exercise so that it isn't going to make her sore and discourage her from future lifting. She won't be lifting a lot, but it will be doing her body good to have some resistance exercise. Start her off with one or two sets per exercise, and make sure her weights don't last any more than 30 minutes so she doesn't get bored. There are lots of simple exercises you can start with, but the key is to make sure she's comfortable and enjoying what she is doing for the first little while.

You need to establish regular exercise as a habit first, and that is usually the hardest thing. Give her all the encouragement you can and work out with her to start if you can. She should start on machines to give her a good base and to ensure she is safe. Then, only when she is ready and wants to can she move on to free weights. Have you ever thought about joining a local gym together? She would probably enjoy fitness classes and the social atmosphere it provides. Good luck.

To refuse to learn anything that could prove beneficial to yourself is a working definition of stupid!

High-intensity training is going all-out, not almost all out. It is taking one set to one's absolute limit, not almost to the limit. It is using whatever equipment’s available. It is not the words of two or three men, but a commitment to work as hard as possible while in the gym without socializing, resting excessively between sets, or falling prey to the 'this isn't going to work so I'll copy the star' attitude"

DP, you are 100% correct. Never, ever try to train your wife. Get her a PT, spend the money, well worth it.

Those who say that there are no differences between training men and women are DEAD wrong. There are differences! It would take me way too much time to describe this comepletely, but I will mention hormonal differences...consideration of the affect of a women's monthly cycle...postural changes due to women's footwear (heels)...structural differences...etc.

If you are not confident in your abilities to train your wife, then get her a good trainer with lots of experience with training women. Wish I could give you more specifics, but I hope this helps!
