Running Issues

BODYBUILDING SUPPLEMENTS

This is my first post..

I have been running on elipticals for a good portion of my life. Recently i wanted to start training for marathons and started running on flat ground (i.e. Sidewalks, streets, ect.). I never realized how pathetic my endurance is when it comes to normal running. I run for 2 minutes maybe and get worn out and have to do the every pathetic "Speed Walking" it makes me feel like a burnt out soccer mom.

Why the hell is this? How could I build my endurance for some everyday running, i mean its only a start but I would like to be able to go for at least a mile. That isnt too much to ask!

I can go for hours on the damn elipticals!

Well you need to realize the speed differences on both of them. I am one of the big runners that hangs out on these forums. I started running and didn't get into the elliptical until I started having knee problems related to my car and motorcycle accidents (what can I say? haha).

If I run on the treadmill where I can force myself to go a certain speed for specific blocks of time, I tend to run an average of 9.5 - 10.5 miles per hour. If I'm using that same intensity on the elliptical machine, it says I'm going over 12 or 13 miles per hour a lot of the time. Don't be fooled by the speed or "level" settings. Running is good if you haven't done it much because as I was saying you can use the treadmil to keep you going at the same pace and it won't slow down unless you reach up and make it slow down, as opposed to the elliptical where you are responsible for all the speed control and it's easy to let yourself fall back and not even realize you've slowed down 2 mph for the last 5 minutes...

All I can say is you're not just magically out of shape, you just need to train your body to be better at running. It's different muscles all together and takes time to get good at (AND IT WORTH IT!!!!).

I started running a year or so ago from nothing at all and this program helped me a lot. Now I will be doing my first half marathon in a few weeks. I am up to 11 miles now.

I never realized how much an elptical can hold you back.

Running is a very specific movement. An elliptical is not the same movement, never mind the fact it is non impact. You have to build up running slowly and take your time. Even start with 2 minutes jogging/1 minute walking and then build from there. Next week, 3/1, then 4/1, etc. Soon you will be running for longer and longer periods.

Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.

The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.
