Do heavy weights push fat OUT of muscles?
Hey there guys.
A girl at my work has recently joined a new gym and the personal trainer insists that to tone up and lose the little fat she has, she must start off her programme by doing heavy weights to 'push' the fat out of the muscles/inbetween the muscles. Is there any truth in this? Does fat actually get into muscle in the first place that then needs 'pushing' out? I assumed fat was always stored outside and around the muscle. Secondly, I thought it was a mixture of dieting and exercise that was the breaks down and uses up fat stores? I would've thought higher reps of weights and cardio would be the better way to burn off fat rather then heavy lower reps. Does the heavy weight actually do any good (more effort needed to lift it, therefore more energy being exerted?) or any sort of fat 'pushing'? I was a little confused by it all, what do you guys make of it? Cheers |

Its true, that more muscle mass will help burn fat quicker, and i think heavy weights would tax the body more which may expend more energy, and help with getting into a caloric deficit to burn fat...but as for pushing fat literally out of muscles, i have no idea where he got that from.
I wouldnt reccomend starting out a program using heavy weights though. Surely thats just begging for an injury right off the bat? How long has she been training aswell? Because if shes a total beginner, obviously starting off with heavy weights is a stupid idea too. |

lol, she is an idiot. Even IF that was true it would seem less likely for the body to use the fat as an energy source. The whole premise is just ridiuculous though.

There is an intramuscular storage depot for fat. However, I have never heard of heavy weights doing anything special with regard to this fat hideout. It doesn't make sense, seeing as how lifting heavy weights requires a very low to almost non-existent percentage of energy from fat stores. It sounds like pseudo-science to me. At least the person is continuing to lift heavy weights though, which is a good thing.
