Lifting Belts...When do you use them?

G'day guys and girls...

Just wondering how often everyone here uses Lifting belts...

I've read and heard a lot of contradicting views on this topic...Some people say only use with heavy Squats/deadlifts while others will take it a step further and use them when performing others like standing Barbell curls, bench press etc...

Personally I find it better to just use proper form when performing squats to bring in stabilizers and haven't had any issues to date...

I don't use them. However, I'm not against using them for big structural compound movements at higher intensities. If you want to strap one on for a 3RM squat, I won't hold it against you. If you wear them for your 15 reps curls, then stop.

What if I am doing curls in the power cage....should I use a belt then???

I've used them for squats and deadlifts on 5 or less rep sets. But I have done way more 5 or less rep sets without a belt than I have with. Generally, I try not to use it as much as possible. I will on a rare occasion, usually when going for a very heavy PR. I still try to keep in my mind how much I can do with and without a belt on any given movement.

Only when doing heavy squats or deadlifts.

Other than that, it just looks silly.

I use to think I needed one for heavy squats. Someone stole my belt, so I am without one. It might have been the best thing to ever happen to me, because I realize now that I don't need it. Now I never use one.

A belt is like a crutch.....if you can squat or dead without one, then why have one?

Safety.

If Im putting over 450lbs on my back, I like to think my spine will have as much support as possible.

I read an article over on T-Nation that simply stated that everyone has a structural limit of how much their spine can take. When you exceed this limit, you'll injure, and re-injure, yourself. The article made sense. So, if I should reach that point, it's either time to back off or get some help in the form a belt. But, until then, I'll go belt-less.

Ive read articles both in favor and against belt use.

Obviously, if you are comfy without it, by all means.

I feel better with it in.

You misunderstand.

If ever the day should come that my squat moves into the 400 pound range, I think that I'd be just fine with using a belt.

Yeah 400 is about my structural limit. I am betting that I would either rupture a disk or squirt my intestines out of my ass squatting 405 with no belt.
