training 101

i need some real help i no you hear it all the time, but i need some advice, i am a 17 year old guy who plays rugby and really want to take it seriously and prehaps become a really good rugby player wht different training methods could i use? and what mix of cardio and muscular work should i do and how often? im 17 18 stone and 6ft 3 inches so im a big guy but want to imrpove muscle mass and my cardio and speed so any advice on what to do and how long and how often would be greatley appreciated please help bit confused thanks

Do some basic strength work and factor in some high intensity conditioning. Improving flexability is always a plus for any sport as well.

how would i go a bout doing this? and sorry if it sounds stupid but what sort of high intensity condtioning? what would be involved?

your question doesn't sound stupid.

THe only advice I can offer is that at your age and for what you are looking for (specific sports performance)....try and find a strength coach in your area to work with. Someone to assess where you are at and someone that can write a full program to help you develop over an extended period of time.

Indeed. However, in the meantime you can certainly do a basic well-rounded strength training program using the guidelines laid out in our stickies.
