Squats activate the core for stabilization, so yes, they are good for abs. Abs are like every other muscle and shouldn't be overworked. Simple planks, weighted crunches, russian twists, cable chops, woodchops...wouldn't need much more than that for your abs to get worked out well. Make sure to give them time to rest too in between ab-designated workouts.

Ab workouts are bad by definition.

A few core training exercises in a program can't hurt though.
