I need a good affordable bike

I want to start biking to work and school. My car has a 160,000 miles on it, and I need to save it for when I really need it.

I know that many of you bike, and I was hoping to get some opinions on a good bike that will hold up, and one I can get a good workout from. I really can't afford anything more than $200.00.

    Things to consider:

How far will you be riding?
Do you plan to ride on cement or trails? Do want a road bike or a mountain bike, hybrid etc. There are a lot of cool commuter bikes that are pretty cool.
Don't buy a bike at a department store if you can help it go to a reputable bike store- they know more about bikes and how to fit a bike to you. Size and fit is important. Also, if you buy a bike at a local bike shop they will often give you a free tune up.

I want a bike that would be easy to ride on pavement to work and school. I want a strong bike that can handle riding up and over curbs and sidewalks. I don't need one for off rode terrain.

Rocky mountain is a good brand-.: ROCKY MOUNTAIN BICYCLES :. What you need is a "city" bike.
    Trek is okay too-trekbikes.com
Kona is good- Go to the bottom of the page and look at the bikes under "Asphalt" I like the 'smoke' KONAWORLD.COM

The thing if you spend $200 you almost have to go second hand to get anything that will hold up. If you spend a bit more the bike will last you a long time $500+. Anything less than $500 new is going to fall apart. But like I said find a good shop and look around and ask questions- it's not about getting the best bike, just the best bike for your needs and style...
A bike is a lot like a car- it has to feel right- you need to try a few out at the shop and get a feel for what you like.
