Core Work

I'm on a push/legs/pull/rest/repeat cycle that has been working well for me. Obviously there are some days where I may take two days off since I have 3 active kids all involved in sports.

I've been lifting for years and just thought of this; I perform core work on everyday that I'm in the gym. I would like to know your thoughts on this. Is this OK or do I need to rest the abs as I do my other muscles?

In addition, all these years I've been performing 20 to 25 crunches between my other sets to satisfy my core work. Is this OK or should I dedicate some time just for core work?

I've read the stickies so don't break my balls about that since I'm probably older than most of you anyway.

Thanks in Advance!

I used to do core work 3x a week and now I only do it once or twice and I haven't really noticed any difference.

I did complete workouts dedicated to core work. I'm with vortrit, I didn't get a decent return for the work put in.

That's not to say that you shouldn't do any core work. I'm just saying that you shouldn't worry that much about it. Just make sure to include some in your normal routine.

You do Squats and Deads, right?

Deads for sure! Squats are another story. I've had 3 knee surgeries on my left knee, one reconstructive and the other 2 maintenance scopes to clean up floating miniscus. I have little to no miniscus left. My range of motion on that knee sucks. I've tried half-squats, but I get fluid on my knee everytime I do them.

I concentrate on Deads and then I super-set leg extensions and leg-curls. This usually leaves me wobblin' a bit and provides a good burn/pump.

Thanks for the info., I'll keep doin what I'm doin since it seems to be workin.

I do a stability movement and a contractional (thats totally not a word...) movement every time im in the gym as part of my warmup.

I find less volume spread out 3x a week in conjunction with lifts like deads, squats, and others that really require core stabilization does the trick.

I think you should do SOMETHING for your core, but nothing on par with what youd do for your main lifting.

how good do the squats and deadlifts work your core?

I usually throw in core work as a superset with some of my auxillary lifts in a workout. Like Biceps curls super set with planks or abdominal fallouts.

Or, I do full body core work, like squat to rotational plate press, two part lifts, two part chops, etc...

I do suspended leg raises, a ab machine, and a type of crunch where you stiffen your legs and keep your arms straight and bring your legs and hands together and try and touch your toes um I mix it up a lot tho, I spend 45 mins every other day on my core and on light days mabey 10-15mins. I see results after doing it a long time but it's me and I'd suggest when you do find something you like that works, stick with it.

I do planks as part of my warm up. After that, I stick a barbell in the corner like ghetto T bar rows and rotate side to side gripping the end of the bar.

Heres how I train.
