Army/Navy Training
I do my sprints early in the morning, and I always see the local ROTC doing their workouts also. I recently watched a few of their workouts, which lasted around 45 minutes or so, and they did core work at least half of the time if not more, and in between they would do dead sprints lasting 2-3 minutes each. I was wondering what their rationale behind the hundreds of crunches they do per day? They did do planks and side planks which I agree is great core work, but according to most replys on core work, 100's of crunches don't do as much for one as leg lifts, and planks, and obviously core lifts in the weight room (squats, bench, etc). Are crunches in between say an HIIT workout ideal?

sure, its just a good way to hit the abs while your trying to catch your breath. getting the most out of your time
marines and army carry a shit load of weight on patrols my dad used to tell me horror stories so the core work probably helps the back http://stinet.dtic.mil/cgi-bin/GetTR...c=GetTRDoc.pdf |

Training for the military is mostly endurance training.

good point. plenty of guys in the gym are in better shape than guys in the military. guys in the military have to train mental indurance as well though. doing planks for half an hour while strengthening your core no doubt, is also a test of mental toughness

And also much more, it shows what type of a person you are to, quick to give up, or someone who will not wuit no matter what, but a strong core does give the back better support, which would be good for carrying heavy loads I assume.
