Do muscle wraps affect growth?

Hi all,

I wear a muscle wrap on my thigh and for personal reasons have to keep it on pretty much all the time. I'm just wondering if the tension from this wrap will prevent muscle growth in my thigh area? I'm doing a pretty standard leg routine consisting of heavy squats, deadlifts, etc.

Thanks!

Lawrence

You should probably be fine. Actually, there are studies showing that under certain circumstances (I can't tell you exactly what they are) training with the blood flow restricted to a given area can elicit growth at even a very low intensity. It has to do with the lack of oxygen and the sudden reliance on completely anaerobic sources of energy, the reliance on the lactate system, and subsequent jump in muscle acidity and localized hormonal response.

That is an interesting concept. Got any links pertaining to that?

Search around for kaatsu training, or tourniquet training. You should be able to Google up some information on it.

It makes some degree of sense

"in the howling bleeding nights, the dogs plunge into the Volga and swim desperately to gain the other bank. The nights of Stalingrad are a terror for them. Animals flee this hell; the hardest stones cannot bear it for long; only men endure."

I've heard about the concept, but I don't like it. Too unnatural and potentially dangerous.

Althought I am not necessarily disagreeing with you - what is natural and what is not is a highly subjective spectrum and a good thing to think about.
