    Advice on burnout

I just got back into lifting about six months ago and have rwally enjoyed it . Over christmas holiday my son and i hit the weights hard and yesterday was workout day we started a little sore and really notice it when we got to the bench press i could not even push up what i did two days ago now my 15 yr old did not seem to have quit as much problem as i did is this normal or have we over trained this week? We worked the upper body 3 time this week.

    3 sets of 10 starting @ 230# and finishing @ 300# bench

Next time you and your 15yr old do 405 for 3-5 reps for 4 to 7 sets whatever equals 20 total reps. Do that twice a week.

400#'s would be impossible for us but we could increase our weight and drop a day. Both of us would like to see where we could take this, i know he has a greater advantage with his age but it will be fun to see and i will be healthier. My boy play's ball and is a starting lineman he stands 6'2" 235, I have high hopes for him. thanks for the reply.

At age 15, you can handle frequent workouts much better. As you get older, you need more rest, especially if you're a bit hard on yourself. If you cannot lift the same weights you could lift two days ago, than you are simply not recovered. Rest a day or two more and you'll be able to lift the weight. Soreness isn't an indicator for whether you should hit the weights or not. For instance, if I do common workouts, like one muscle group today, another tomorrow, and so on, then I get terribly sore. But if I follow full-body workouts, which is what I'm currently doing, I usually don't get sore - a bit stiff at the most. However, full-body workouts are cruel to your body. Plus there is scientific background that soreness is not directly related to the ability of the muscle to recover.

Last time you took a week off?

    You were still sore?

Is it just the bench press?

I just really became serious again in november though i did start to lift back in june so i have not had a week off since before november. My son usually lift's at school with the team so i do my workouts alone but with christmas break we really hit the wieghts hard and enjoyed every minute. I was sore from our previous workout but the only failure i had was in the bench i guess i may have over done it. I am in no way an expert on lifting and in fact i just quit smoking this past summer but i do know that i love the burn and have always been active. My job is very physical as i am a horseshoer so i have maintained good strenght. I have been reading post here trying to learn more and educate myself, I am working on getting it right and changeing my diet and lifestyle in general. I appreciate the response and was just trying to figure possible causes for my failure. Thanks

Congratulations on quitting smoking! I know how hard that is since I quit myself nearly a year ago. I used to smoke around 50 cigs a day and God only knows how difficult it is to stay away from this stuff.

    Some good points.

Cant give advice without knowing what you've been doing to cause this problem.

Inadequete rest and recovery is one of the main reasons of burnout, poor program design is another.
