Cardio Question
I have a concern in regards to my cardio. I'm concerned that maybe my cardio is counterproductive making me catabolic. I run 4miles in 26 1/2 minutes with my heartbeating at 90% of its max. Is this catabolic? Should i be running slower. Is there a certain range i should be looking to run at. I'm currently 210lbs. with 15% body fat.

This is an impossible question to answer going off the information you've given.
Whats making you come to this conclusion? |

I haven't come to any conclusion.. I just obviously don't want to do something that is counter-productive. What other information would you need?

I meant the conclusion that its catabolic. What is making you think this? Have you lost muscle?

No i haven't lost muscle. It just seemed to me that being at 90% of your maximum heart rate for 26 1/2 minutes running 4 miles could be catabolic. For fat burning purposes mostly I read to run between 65-80% of your maximum heart rate.. my only probelm with that is after i complete a workout like that i don't feel like i worked out that hard. On the other hand 4 miles in 26 1/2 minutes.. you feel like you did something.

I wouldnt worry. Theres no such thing as these "fat burning zones" or whatever. If you're not seeing any negative effects from it, then it isnt a problem, right?

I have run 3 miles in less than 18 min numerous times it just means that hes running a lil over a 6 min mile, which is superb, to most peoples standards, but if you have ran enough, and of course-got the heart and determination to do it, its not that hard! ask most of your military friends, mostly marines tho. sorry, just thot i would add that on his behalf...even tho ive never seen or heard of him! |

High intensity short duration (what you're doing) is better than low intensity long duration.

Most people throw out that statment (HIT is greater than doing regular cardio) without any clue of what they are talking about. They simply except it as fact because it has been popularized and published in magazine articles and other websites. Follow along in my blog over the next few entries. I will be addressing cardio for awhile. |
