I have tried them a few times. Not a fan of how they torque my back.

I have never done them, but P-funk's comment about torque is the first thing that came to my mind also. I think over time, lifting heavy, you'd mess up your back.

They're fucking hard on the form, but the idea is ok. There are easier alternatives.

I've done them. I think it's a decent exercise, but make sure you ease into this one as it can get ugly really fast.

I dont understand. The one arm dl is sipposed to improve you back health. It works deep muscles in your back that are difficult to develop. It does a great job with the obliques as well.

And you should do them with a barbell for a great grip.

And you should place the barbell to the side next to you feet, like a heavy suitcase on the floor. Its not a one arm version of the dl,more like a whole new exercise.

They are fun to do once in a while. I would not do them all the time. As others said...they do torque your back.

Side bend is more effective, and less dangerous.

Care to qualify that statement with factual support?

I think they are a fun exercise to do. I don't go heavy on them though.

Sorry. I should have quoted. I was responding to this:

In that context, side bends, which also exercise deep back and oblique muscles, are a. safer and (at least) as effective.

I don't see one legged deadlift as a terribly functional movement, and the risk of injury is not insubstantial.

That being said: Almost EVERYBODY here knows more than I do about lifting.

First of all, we aren't talking about 1 legged deadlifts, even though I think that they make for a fanatstic exercise for strengthening the posterior chain while reducing the load on the spine and reducing the chance of injury overall.

Second, I don't see how side bends are any safer, or how you can say they are just as effective. One involves preventing movement, one involves creating movement. Side bends promote lateral movement at the spine, and potentially the lumbar spine, which can certainly be dangerous.

Which one is more effective is going to be completely dependent on what your goals are, and even then all we have is hard to compare empirical evidence. I'm going to place my bets on the compound movement where you can use more load and prevent movement instead of create it.

exactly its not the one leg dl. If youve seen pavel or are into his stuff you'll understand. I was really sore the next day after i tried the one arm dl, i had absolutely no problems with it at all. My abs were really hurting along with my back and legs.

keep doing it and I bet you will have problems down the track. It hurts my back just thinking about it. Its sounds almost as bad as neck raises.

Again, I'm not the biggest fan, but I definitely think it's a valid exericse if done correctly.

I could see doing it one leg. But I don't think my back would be that happy with me if I did one arm.

Obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.

??? i seriously dont think u guys know what im talking about, first of all the weights not suposed to be infront of you, it should be next to you, having one end of the bb facing the same dirction as you. And no it does not torque ur back, i dont know what u guys are talking about. Its supposed to be healthy for your back, working the deep muscles. And considering its one arm, the weights not supposed to be huge.
again, its called a suitcase style dl as well so you should do it as if u are lifting a suitcase off the floor from the side.

Really? I had my mom do a set of these. I think it feels good. I only use like a 40lb DB though. She used a 15lber. I'll take your word for it though.

I think one arm DL's are meant to be done with light to moderate weight for reps. I read that this is a good exercise for competing in grappling, so endurance...yeah!
