What day would you do pullovers?

Which muscle group do pullovers mainly target? Should they be done on a chest day or back or what?

I don't do them but I've heard a lot of people say they like to do them on chest day.

I always did them on chest day, but then I read in Oxygen or M&F Hers that one fitness competitor does it on back day, which got me confused so I stopped doing them! I loved them on chest day, though.

Depends HOW you do them.

For me, Close Grip or a Dumbell Pullover works my chest

Whereas a medium grip workss my lats

Thats right, using a bb will hit the lats while using a DB will hit the chest. (hand placement)

Cool

Not quite, Scott.

Your using your lats mostly no matter what grip you use (providing it's still in the region of a "pullover" and not some sort of twisted mutant sister exercise).

The grip just decides how much of another muscle will be recruited.

It's still a back exercise at the end of the day and should be on back day.

Pulldowns use the chest too, but you're not gonna do pulldowns on chest day (unless you do chest and back on the same day of course).

The pictures showing the primary muscle groups worked while doing a particular exercise, in this case a pullover, show that it is primarily working the chest--and nothing about the back. Still lost...

Supposedly it can expand your rib cage, although once your cartillage is done fusing together (your done growing), it wont grow as much. Same with ultra-wide grip deadlifts, another item to stretch the body out.

Dumbbell Pullover

Target muscle - Pectoralis Major, Sternal

Barbell Pullover

Target muscle - Latissimus Dorsi

it's the exact same movement w/ the exception of different hand spacing...in #1 even if you relax the lats they still assit the chest to move the weight

pullovers expanding rib cage is all theroy no proof, more bogus info from Arnold's Encyclopedia...no exercise performed by an adult can cause changes in the human skeleton...

LAM, many powerlifters have rib cages that bodybuilders often dont (when viewed from the side), I dont imagine this is all genetics. Explanation or ideas on this one?

I've seen the same basic movement listed as a chest and back workout. Personally, I don't see it as a chest exercise. It's just like a standing cable pullovers which is a back exercise.

TJohn, I'll say yes, because I noticed improvement in those when I used to do them with a dumbell.

Yes. Although heavy training in general aids in increasing bone density.

Scotty, the chest is just an assisting muscle in both types of exercise. The primary muscle used are the lats. The site is fucked.

I agree, lats is the primary mover in a pull-over if done correctly. I do not agree that "the site is fucked" though, it has some very good animated pics.
