Stitting BB clean and press ??

I was chatting with a friend of mine the other day and he swears by this exercise for great overall shoulder development. Barbell sitting clean and press. Basically resting the bb on the bench (he rests it on his thighs) and cleaning it up to the starting position of military press and pressing it up, then back to that position and back to the bench. He says, do it all very controlled except for blasting out of the bottom pressing position. Could this put a heavy strain on the lower back, being in the sitting position ??

Military presses are a very natural movement for me and can go pretty heavy with good form, I don't want to mess that up by trying this.

Personally I would not do any over-head lifting in a seated positon. you are robbing yourself of stimulating your lower torso/abs by doing so and also applying unnatural forces to the low back...
I train differently than most, my beef is with gravity the weights on the bar are just the medium...Thanks to Wall Street your slice of the American Pie has been reduced to a crumb.

I wouldn't think you'd be able to do much weight if you have to lift it off the bench from a seated position.

You'd have to try it I guess.
    Cool

did them for many years. switched to standing several years ago and have noticed better development in my lower torso as I don't do any direct ab training...

I do partials on the smith (military to the front) on occasion when training for bench meets...

Ok, John. I got this from FAngel's journal off WBB and the photos are off elitefits.com

"Seated db power cleans - Performed explosively
Seated Dumbbell Cleans: This exercise is designed to isolate the posterior deltoids and upper back. To begin grab a pair of dumbbells and sit on the edge of a bench. Start the movement by pulling your shoulder blades up and back while at the same time cleaning the dumbbells up to a 90% flexion of the elbows."

Ahh yes, seated db power cleans. An excellent exercise to build the posterior deltoids and traps. The main purpose of this movement is too primarily build explosive power that will carry over onto your bench press, hence why so many pl'ers use them to great effect within their routines.

Usually a rep range between 12-15 is used
