hey Nick.....you are still young. 16 isnt the age anyone should get into weight training that serious........imo. especially with suppliments. anyone who tells ya to take protien and glut and work hard in the gym is very irrisonsable and nieve. your tendons and muscles are still developing naturally and shouldnt be over stressed with training or suppliments! for now, train slowly, very basic...and low intense. get protien naturally, ya know thru food...wait till ya atleast hit 18-19 before ya start gettin serious.

I am going to have to disagree with you guys. I believe that a protein shake is fine for a 16 year old. Are you trying to tell him that getting the needed protein into his muscle after he works out will hurt him in the long run? I would say aim for around 220 grams a protein a day try to make around 75% of that come from real food. As for glutamine it is a subject many people disagree about I only find it usefull when dieting because it helps reduce the muscle loss. Training I think if you have your form down on all your exercises you can go with the16 to 6 rep range. I beleive I read some where that you need to use at least 65% of streght to increase it. You would not gain that much by doing high reps at lower intensty.

220 grams a day seems a little high for the guy.
Especially if he usually takes in only half that amount.
I think that a good essential fat and SOME protein is sufficient.
Plus he is not dieting (and shouldnt) so he will not be losing muscle.

....and thats my $.02

HELL I bet this boy's eats food by the dump truck. Also his test levels are most likely through the roof too. That is how all teen boys are. I am thinking if he eats that many calories to begin with why doesnt he just put the right amounts of p/c/f. If he does this he will have a perfect muscle building enviroment. I think if he wants to gain muscle or lose fat 16 is a good age. Let me tell you once you turn even 23 or 24 gaining 5 pounds of muscle or losing ten pounds of fat doesnt come as easy as it did back in the day

I agree a 100% with bigss75. The sooner you start education yourself the better. Protein powder will not hurt him, neither will glutamine. Get most of your protein from food true, but that can be kind of hard sometimes, so to finish it off get some protein powder in there. Glutamine I have found extremely useful, it has definitely helped on my recovery time. I take my glutamine before and after workout, totaling 20g, Protein powder I take 3 times a day 2 of them being before and after workout. I would also get some vitamins in there.

Thanks KataMaster I have heard about the effects of large doses of glutamine like that you are taking does it help recovery better than a large dose of vitamin C. Second where do u buy your glutamine?

In my opinion there is nothing for recovery better than glutamine and some quality sleep , I get my glutamine from www.dpsnutrition.com I get the one from ProLab. I don’t take vitamin C alone, I’m currently taking a multi-vitamins that has all kinds of shiat in it, it’s from Universal they call it Animal Pack

Here is everything it has

I'm not a big fan of glut but I agree the protein is important, if you can't get enough from regular food then a shake or two a day will help.

But remember, more isn't always better, your body can only take in so much at a time, the rest just gets pooped out or turned into fat if your not burning it.

Cool

No thats not at all what im saying... im saying if he doesnt want to pay for it he doesnt HAVE to have it... we produce a lot of protein this age with testosterone anyway so if he doesnt want to spend his money he can use food as his main source of protein... i never said anything about a shake hurting people in the long run i guess thats what sandwich was sayin but i wuz just agreein that he could get it in food

well i gotta go with J'BO....eating a good amount of protien will be fine for this guy. i dont believe taking 220gms of protien is necessary for a 16 year old. his tendons and muscle fibres are still developing, let alone building from that. remember guys..hes not that old!.......and as for being in yer 20s and growing/loosing fat........thats no prob. atleast then your physically matured, and your metabolism is still fast. thats your best growth period...imo...

since he is not dieting and a newbie to training I would bag the glutamine and use a product like Muscle-Link Recovery X for post workout. he can get the rest of his protein requirements from real food...

Definately dont rob yourself of sleep, that is a big mistake for a lot of young folks. I knew a really huge guy in high school, and ripped to boot, he was short - not sure if he toyed with roids or what that he ended up only being about 5'6" (Italian), at that height he probably had about 18.5" or 19" arms, he was that freaking huge, and probably about 6% or 7% bodyfat, massive chest, yada yada.

Some protein is fine, don't be an ego-lifter and hurt yourself in the gym, use weights you can work strictly with, and remember the sleep! 9-10 hours is my opinion, thats what I got during my HS days and I still prefer to have 8 or more a day, and I had no problems growing. I was a huge milk drinker my whole life, and still have a hard time not having it at every meal, I'm 26.

I'm poor with sleep, sometimes I sleep in 2 shifts (bad for REM I'm sure), but I feel best when I have 8 hours or so, 7 is pretty good. I have gone through whole weeks with 3-5 a night though, but most of those days are past.

As little as I sometimes get though, I'm not one of those people that feels great after 3 hours of sleep. There was a women in Guiness that slept 1 hour a day only, in England (liverpool?), now THAT is nuts, I wish I could do that but I just can't.

I am a sleeper, and i get at least 8 hours a night, which really helps me repair my torn muscles. I agree with all the advice given here, but really dont think glutamine is nessesary (but wont hurt you). A shake a day wont be bad, cause i am sure you arent getting enough protein right now. Please post what you normally eat or else we really cant judge what to do. Dont go crazy on the shakes that is one thing you have to remember, it will screw up your digestive system.

What about the se?
When people are not used to taking in larger amounts of protein and all of a sudden have 2-3 shakes a day, they will have problems digesting the protein. Also if you arent taking the shakes with a essential fat source you will not absorb all the protein you ingest. In other words you get gas from too many shakes.

I have known people who claim to get gas etc from shakes, I've never had that problem myself. Only thing I stay away from are weight gainers, I dont have a caloric intake problem, but the extra protein through the day really helps make my numbers at the end of the day.

I know that extra protein is benefical i am just saying to slowly introduce it into your diet and to try to get as much protein from food as you can. Dont forget about your EFA's (natural PB, flax seed oil, Udo's oil, and heavy cream).
