New Shoes

I don't know if this is in the right forum, but I am in need of some new shoes and I have a few questions about buying a pair. I've only really ever owned skate shoes, although I do have a pair of basketball shoes I wear to the gym, but I want to start running and whatnot this summer.

1) what should I look for in a pair? I have a tendency to develop shin splints, I do however have orthodics made for me, but what else should I be looking for. I plan on using these for like I said running/sprints, and maybe the occasional soccer or basketball game (I know cleets would be best for soccer, but I don't plan on playing a lot).

2) what are some all around good brands to consider?

I'm no expert, but if you weigh more than about 170lb's, go to a specialist store who can evaluate your running style and give you something that helps support you. If under, look for a comfortable shoe, with the enphasis on good shock absortion. This is your most important factor.

Saucony, Asics are very good and can be picked up quite cheap. And brands like Nike and addidas are not to bad too, but tend to cost more (go figure)

As for shin splints, feet flat, lean forward until you feel your calfs stretch like hell. (Obviously lean on something) Keep that position, lift one foot, rock onto toes of the foot on the ground and back. This should help, do this before you go.
