When you lift a weight you perform the positive part of an exercise, when you lower the weight you perform negative movement. If you blast the weight up fast and then slowly lower it I believe that is whats called doing negatives.

What are negatives?

The negative is the most effective portion of a repetition. Many lifters use negatives to blast through a plateau and gain strength...you simply load up a bar with 110 or 120% of your max (with a good spotter, of course) when doing bench or squats (on a power rack) or whatever and only do the negative portion...doing the positive with assistance. Or with regular weights you can lower the weight slower (like a 4-6 second count) and then explode it up on the positive portion. They will make you sore...![]()
Today I can do what others will not so that tomorrow I will do what others cannot.
The difference between winners and losers is that winners do things that losers don't want to do.
Sorry, forgot to mention that beginners probably shouldn't do these...wait until you have experience before trying them for your own safety.

Good point, forgot to mention that myself.Originally posted by ponyboy

I've had some of my best growth following intermittent workouts using negatives. (A few intense weeks out of the year)
There is training system that uses negatives all the time. Its called TUT or Time Under Tension. (I use this method)
In my opinion it works wonders.
It also works good if you can't do pullups yet. use a bench to get you up to the top position, then raise your feet behind you and slowly lower yourself down. Even though you can't lift yourself up yet, use some weight as well as your body weight and you'll be able to do pullups in no time.![]()

*** This method is used for all portions of the movement. It's not just limited to the negative ROM.

TUT seems pretty cool, but I didn't happen to notice anything abnormal about use of negatives within it.

The idea with negatives it that your doing more weight than you can lift without a spotter while TUT is the full range of motion, both positive and negative so they arn't really ment to do together.

after yer reps positive...top of the motion....slowly let down/back the weight. this is a major factor in builing muscle and strenght that alot dont do!
i train by this method.
