Use straps
I have been doing shrugs for a long time. And I tried power shrugs last night. And I have trouble holding the weight because its alot more weight than what I use for normal shrugs. How do you guys improve your grip strength?
Use straps
start training grip.

train static grip.
pick up heavy dumb bells/barbell and hold.
Had the same problem...bought weight lifting straps... dont have that problem anymore.
Yeah, its that simple
I use my straps for everything now too...I love using them on the pullup machine, because my hands give up before my back... the best (good) back soreness ive gotten is from grips and doing some serious pullups.
You don't wanna count on straps all the time for every thing. You'll be more well balanced in the long run if your grip is strong like the rest of your body. Ive herd of these CoC grippers, these are supposed to be gr8 for grip strength I'm thinking of picking some up.
use straps AND train your grip at the same time.. keep working at it..grip can take awhile but typically it comes up fast. Just work up until you can't hold it anymore THEN use the straps. It's what I did and now i'm able to hold onto over 700lbs without them!
find a good hand gripper too.. things like the grippers found at prowriststraps.com have done wonders for me. I use them typically a few minutes every couple of days and it's paid off. Take it easy with grippers though you can overtrain your grip just like anything else.
i personally uised straps and liked the weight i could do but found it more beneficial to do as much as you could do without straps and work your grip strength up. I like my massive forearms and powerful handshake and the best way to get that is to never cheat for your forearms like that.
I agree that its good to work your grip, but im heavier, and its really hard on my hands and grip to keep going on pullups on some weeks when i want to really shock my system and train to absolute failure... but i agree, not depending on them for every thing would be a good call. I use them all the time though whenever I am doing heavy, lifting stuff (DB lunges, shrugs, hex squats/deads, etc)
Yeah i understand both sides to this topic. I am just glad to say that my grip has pretty much completely caught up with whatever wieght i could do with straps and i love the powerful forearms and wrists ive gotten with it. If you are going to use straps for heavy lifts i would strongly suggest at least at the end of a workout using straps to lift those same wieghts and hold them for as long as possible without straps to strengthen the grip up as well for example if you do 100 pound DB shrugs with straps, go back to them before you leave and hold those 100 pounders in your hands for as long as you can without dropping them before you leave.

One more tip for girp before i leave this board is to grip everything very tightly when you lift. Even on benching i like to squeeze the crap out of that bar as if im trying to crack it just to strengthen those arms up.

Start doing cleans - this brought my grip up in a hurry. Also just jump up and hang off stuff whenever you think of it. Do farmer's walks carrying heavy dumbbells around. And try an "over/under" grip. Alternate hand positions from set to set. This has helped me tremendously.
static holds are good. I've used grippers before, mainly the COC grippers, plate pinches etc.
Straps are good for when i'm going heavy on DB rows or bent over barbell rows, but I really don't use them on shrugs anymore. Found that I'd rather use the shrugs to train my grip than my traps.
don't be afraid to get some chalk either.

Believe it or not Travis, there are gyms out there that forbid the use of chalk.
Bastards.
