    Effect of American Football on gym gains

    I'm thinking about joining an American Football team next semester and I'd like to hear what people have to say about the effect football or sports in general have on your gains. Of course I have an idea, but I'd like to hear from people with experience.

    The team I'm looking at trains biweekly for 2 hours. That's excluding the weekly competition, which I probably won't be participating in for the first few months.

    By the way, I'm pretty ignorant about American Football. It's a really rare sport in Holland.

    So what are your experiences? Did you still see gains in strength and size (assuming you managed fatigue)? Do you sip on a shake during practice?

    No, American football destroys gains. I played for 12 years. I spent 7 months(off-season) putting on size. My the end of the playing season, I was lean, in fantastic shape, but weaker than shit.

    The combination of injuries, lack of time to lift, and overtraining will ripe through your gains like a hot knife threw butter.

    But as I type this, I think that on the other hand, you will not practice like we did. All three coaches were ex-military with the head coach being ex-marine. We were a small school and many including myself played both ways and special teams, so our conditioning had to be tip top.

    I guess long story short, it all depends on how much of yourself you dedicate to the sport. Also, training biweakly seems like grossly insufficient training time. You will hardly have enough time to even understand the plays.

    College sports are definitely and vastly less competitive in Holland than in the USA, yeah.

    How often did you train and for how long? Did you do mostly interval work or steady state cardio too?

    We lifted weights for an hour full body 3 days a week and we practiced 3 hours 4 days a week. Games were Every Friday night, so Saturday and Sunday were the only days of rest. I couldn't keep weight on, but I also didn't know shit about training or nutrition then.
    Nearly all cardio was in the form of sprints or some sort of power drill. We did virtually no steady state cardio.

    Biweekly for 2 hrs? For a team sport like football? Sorry, but no way will you get anywhere at that rate.

    Haha, I knew America was a lot more competitive, but I didn't know the difference was that big.

    4h a week of training plus a game is considered above average in Holland. It's just for fun. You can't get scholarships or sponsors via sports here. There are no stadia with thousands of fans except for the pros here. Just some guys on a field playing ball. In fact, there is (sadly) only a single pro American Football team in the entire Netherlands.

    Anyway, this is a reassuring suggestion that all the horror overtraining stories I've heard are not comparable to what I'm going to do.
