    Benching Position

Ran into an old friend of mine in the gym the other day.
He did a form of benching that I have always known to be 'bad' and relatively dangerous:
Legs in the air, ankles crossed.
I told him this. (dangerous, etc)
Told me that its safe and I should do my research...
um..yeah...have done that. Still say dangerous.

As I've known how to do them:
Keep your heels on floor and your butt and shoulders on the bench with a slight arch in your back.
He tried to correct me that the back should be flat, no arch.

    So, my two questions:
    1) feet up, ankles crossed dangerous?
    2) Back flat or slightly arched?

Lesson 1: Don't try and help friends unless they ask. I learned this the hard way. My best friend works out like a retard, and he gets pissed anytime I offer suggestions.

Lesson 2: Feet on the floor, ass on the bench, arch if you like, but it doesn't really matter, imho. I get more power when I arch, but that doesn't really equate to more gains.

back should never be flat! That is not a good position for the spine. the curves are there for a reason! Tell your freind he is stupid and should do his research.

I sometimes tell my friend on how to have proper form while doing an exercise and most of the time he does not mind unless I get really specific then he tells me to go away. I think it is because men just have that pride and ego and don't like to be told how to do things especially in front of other people and if there are women around it's even worse. I remember one time a guy was with his girlfriend and an older man came up to him and tried to give him some advice on his technique and the other guy just said "i know what I am doing alright!?". The older man just apologized and backed off.

Benching with your feet up is safe and I have done it several times and I have seen others do it as well...Even seen Jean Claude VanDamme doing them this way.

It really makes you use your whole body to keep the weights steady and perfect. I dont use heavy weight, but I would go so far as 225 maybe 255lbs..

There are lots of different ways to do things...Just takes time , effort and an emagination and the willingness to do something off the beaten path.

I prefer powerlifting form on the bench, the arch keeps my lower back happy with big weights.

Jean Claude may train a certain way, but I don't remember him lifting particularly big weights which I prefer to be able to do. If it works for him fine, I don't go to the gym to emulate others but to find what works for me. I'd encourage the same for everyone else.

Benching with your feet up seems like a fantastic way to increase instability in a lift. You wouldnt squat without your hands touching the bar, so why bench with your feet off the floor?

And like has been said - shoulder blades pinned back, elbows in. I arch my back as far as its comfortable, im not gonna expend effort keeping a huge arch in my back.

Jean Claude VanDamme isn't a competitive lifter. He is an actor. Benching with your feet up is not only unnecessary, it is dangerous. I bet you can't link to a single credible source that shows a single advantage to doing that.

Ha this is one I never forget. I dunno why I love taking advice in the gym, I hate when someone gets all pissy because you offered your 2 cents.

I've also been prey to the whole "never give advice to friends" thing. At best they just ignore me and do something retarded like a 6 days a week, 2 hour a session, bodypart split. At worst, they shout at me and tell me "you dont know EVERYTHING there is to know about sport and training!!".

No, i dont, but i dedicate most of my free time to reading about it and putting the methods i read about into practice. You do neither, and thats why you have made no progress EVER, where i went from 108lbs to 180lbs in a few short years, and am ALWAYS improving in some area.

Dumb shits. Why do they have a hard time accepting that somebody they know has learned something?
