    too young to deadlift?

hi, my coach said that i shouldn't be doing deadlift's as i am too young ( 15 ). He said that i was still growing and stuff and it could severely damage my back. He also said that i should avoid SLDL(straight-legged dead lift ) at all costs as its one great way to damage my vertebrae, anybody has an opinion on this?

Honestly? It means your coach is a complete idiot and isn't knowledgeable enough to teach you proper form.

Its all in the form and coaching. He might not be comfortable pushing you into it, but personally, I started dead lifts, SLDL's and power cleans at 14... Never had a problem, but we had GOOD lifting coaches and trianers on site all the time.. Good luck

To be fair, if he thinks this is a SLDL, he's right - but not just for you at your age - that's stupid at ANY age.

Using proper form, a SLDL is identical to a Romanian deadlift, nomenclature I prefer because it doesn't imply locked knees like some people misinterpret from the "S" in SLDL (which is really for "stiff", not "straight" - the knees are softly straight and the weight travels straight up and down the legs, in contact with your body in both directions).

Your coach is misinformed. You can deadlift at any age. Deads are good for you.
Wondering where to start? Confused? "Homework 1" will get you started.

Think you're ready for the "next step"? Take this test.

I am a huge supporter of DL's once you get to high school. It angers me to see many programs get rid of them because of injuries or the fact that they don't see them beneficial in athletics, especially football. But sadly enough, that is the case.

I believe with a well coached program, where you actually teach the kids "how" to lift, and correct form, this problem would be avoided and you'd see alot more students lifting alot more overall. Unfortunately, this is sometimes easier said than done when dealing with bigger school programs.
