I was just wondering if all cardiovascular activity has the same effect on your body. For instance, at baseball try-outs this spring there will be a lot of running involved. The players are expected to be in shape for tryouts. So if I was to do something like jump rope to get in shape, would that help my endurance for running or do you always have to perform the exact activity that you are preparing for to form endurance?
if you want to be a good runner, then you need to run.
but this leads to my next question.....how much endurance does a baseball player need? to much long slow distance running is going to be way counter productive to the energy system demands of the game of baseball.
thanks for the feedback. obviously in a game time situation the most a baseball player will have to run is 360 feet. Our coaches are 2 former boston red sox players and they'll all about acting tough and making us run. they feel that the weaklings will get weeded out early by doing this.
your coaches are morons. just because you played the game, doesn't mean that you know how to coach it. also, most players don't know jack about the strength and conditioning aspect because they had someone tell them what to do their entire careers.
My college baseball team ran a good bit. But I mean....what kinda shape do you need to be in? Its baseball. Hell I used to think I'd pull a muscle from not moving enough.
well last years tryouts were actually pretty tough. but i got through them. all i did as far as running to get in shape for that was about a 2 mile or so run 3 days a week. However, I want to be more efficient this year because I've heard that long distance running doesnt do much if your going to have to do sprints.
Nope, totally different energy systems...well kinda. Just mimic what you think youre gonna have to do. Gassers, all that kinda stuff. Just start doing sprint intervals. And yea, eat.
2.lines 3 people deep-suicides on the basketball court-8-10 times
3.lines 3 people deep-"300s" (300 feet)- Run from baseline to baseline until you have ran 300 feet-4-6 times
4. Break
5. Warm-up, various drills, fielding, pitches throw, catchers catch, tee work etc.
6. All players form a single file line and run around the gym. On command from the coach, on player at a time will break off from the line and sprint ahead in order to lap the rest of the team and move into first in the line. This process is repeated until every player has ran ahead lapped the team and reached the front. (12-15 mins)
If you can reach your nuts with one hand while holding a bat in the other hand, you're in plenty good shape!
pretty good though.
No shit though, if you could knock the seams off of a ball they should care less. Fucking playing first base or something! Gotta be in shape just in case you get in one of those 15 second long pickles.
