Gaining weight, but staying in shape?

Something just occurred to me...If you gain weight, but continue to do HIIT cardio and lift weights, how would you get out of shape? I was always under the impression that the heavier you got, the worse shape you would be in? If you continue to run, or do whatever you do, you should get better at these things as you eat over maintenance, correct?

Or, is their some side effect? (lost endurance or something)

What i mean is cardiovascular shape. Basically, the things you are doing and training for.

For instance, if i continue to lift weights and do HIIT cardio and maybe play football outside one day a week, but eat over maintenance, shouldn't i continue to get into better shape, although i'm gaining weight? The goal is to obviously gain muscle, but fat comes as well. So, i was wondering if your gaining this weight, if anything will decline on the way...In my opinion, i don't see how it would if you continue doing it....

To keep gaining anything by doing the activities you describe you must eat CONSIDERABLY over your maintenance.
