I just started working with free weights a few weeks ago. I have a set of dumbells that goes to 20 pounds per handle and I bought an olympic curl bar (no weights yet) last weekend.
I am currently training three times a week with the weights and doing cardio three times a weel with one day of total rest per week. I am also using a whey supplement after weight training to help the muscles recover.
I guess my question is when do I need a bench and what is recommended?

thanks for the reply. I am researching benches now and will likely get one in the next few weeks.
For a bit more $$, you could look into a very basic squat rack which could double as a support for your benching needs. Obviously you would also need just a plain bench. I know we have 'Play It Again Sports' store in our area of Indiana. This is a pretty good source IMO for used items. You also may want to look on the internet at craigslist.com. I have never used craigslist, but have heard of some decent deals to be found there.
If you look into a squat rack, make sure you have enough room, height wise in your home. I used to have one in my basement and found I was able to perform a multitude on exercises with it. Mine even had a pulley and cable system. Just food for thought!
i think a power rack is your best bet for home use

I have seen the ads on line for the power-rack. I am now doing squats with a full barbell yet (doing it with dumbells) because I am trying to get used to lifting and holding good form. I started curls and shrugs though with a curl bar yesterday. I am still doing concentration curls and all other exercises with dumbells right now.
It looks like the power rack is something that you can expand on as your fitness level changes. Is this correct?
a) i would start with purchasing weights for the bar!
b) then try and get a power rack or half rack
c) you don't have to worry about the bench at first if you have the first two. you can overhead press instead - this was how the old school guys lifted, they just did overhead pressing. You can build a strong foundational base like that.

Do NOT buy new. Save yourself some serious $$$ and keep an eye on your newpaper's classified ads, Craig's List, etc. There are THOUSANDS of lifting products out there just collecting dust because people made a New Year's resolution but then gave up after a couple of weeks.
Besides the aforementioned power rack, weights and bench, keep an eye out for Power Block dumbells. It's an adjustable set that goes up to 90 lbs but fits on a stand that's only two feet square.
Rules? You mean we have RULES for that???
Thanks for the info. I am going to be looking at the paper this weekend for a bench and weights!!
