There is no time better than today to start doing squats and deadlift.

But, I wouldn't start doing them away from your coach. You need someone to teach you good form. Deadlift is one of the most dangerous lifts, imo.

Yup - your coach is stupid, once you learn how to properly do squats and deadlifts, there isn't anything better for you IMO.

When I was in high school (late 70's) we never did any squats or deads either. When I got to college and had an actual strength coach, my vertical jump increased by 6" during my freshman year when I incorporated these lifts.

he's probably just trying to emphasize the point that they are more advanced lifts (which they are) and need to be done properly in order to avoid injury... but i think if you're serious about training and have somebody to help you with your form then there's no harm in doing them if you start with light weight... master the form first then start to add on the pounds... don't rush yourself into an injury...

Oi vey. Ask him to watch squat and cue you (i just feel that he probably wouldn't be able to do that properly from what you told us) and then come here, read all the stickies and train yourself. You'll be better off in the long run.

Matter of fact, we did combine with plyometric exercises. We did the plyos after squatting. HOWEVER, if you have not performed plyometric exercises before, I would STRONGLY recommend that you hook up with someone that knows their stuff. Plyos can be tricky and you can easily screw yourself up if not done correctly. I guess you can say that for almost anything you read on this board!

Check this link out and PM me if you want some more info. I had my daughter doing plyos this past summer in preparation for volleyball season; she hated the workouts, but loved the outcome!

I learned on my own and I'm 16. It took a long time to get it right. But I managed to get the form down. Just watch a lot of videos and read about how to perform them correctly. Then practice with light weight.
