    Spinning?

If I want to do two cardio sessions a week and really enjoy spin class would you think it is a viable option to go along with my 4 days split? I enjoy spin class and enjoy doing cardio at a minimum of two times per week because it helps me feel leaner. It may be psychological but I feel like I need at least 2 cardio sessions per week. So how would you rate a 45 minute spin class as an option for cardio?

spin class is basically just interval training for the set amount of time. if you like it, do it!

Depends on the Spinning class. MOST of them are interval types but on some days they have what's called Race Day which is a sustained 80-90% maximum for 20 minutes. Other days are Recovery Days where you only get to 60% for 20 minutes.

IMHO you need to establish a definitive goal; do you want to gain mass or do you want to stay lean. (Yeah, I'm gonna get flamed for that. I know you can gain mass AND stay lean at the same time, but it sure ain't easy. I'm old school along with just being old. I bulk then cut, bulk then cut, lather, rinse, repeat.)

Thanks for the replies. The two days I choose to go to spin class are pretty much always interval type days. It is 45 minutes of up then down race then slow etc. The classes are fun, i sweat my ass off and feel great when I leave. Now, to be honest, if I am going to do anything at this point I do want to gain, but because of my own personal insecurities and fears I choose to do it VERY slowly. This means that I would rather eat only 200 calories or so a day above maitenance. I know this is a terribly slow way to gain mass but if I have found I just enjoy the way I look more if I continue to do this. I get frustrated when bulking after just 2 or 3 weeks because I hate putting on the fat.

Now, if I am going to do two spin classes a week the question is now: What days do I do the class?

my current lifting routine looks like this (briefly)

    Monday: Horizontal Push/Pull
Tuesday: Quad dominant legs (hamstring accessory) Bicep Isolation (just one exercise)

    Wednesday: OFF

    Thursday: Vertical Push/Pull
Friday: Hamstring dominant legs (quad accessory) Triceps Isolation (just one exercise)

    Saturday: OFF
    Sunday: OFF

In the past I had been doing cardio every single morning with the crew team but it was mostly steady state long distance running (10-14 miles). I only did that for three weeks but I had serious difficulty in the gym because of that (obviously). But when I just do the lifting and no cardio I don't feel as lean as I would like. I could do 20 minute of HIIT twice a week, but I don't really enjoy that nearly as much as I enjoy Spin Class. I just like the atmosphere and I believe I am able to actually perform at a higher intensity when in the spin class because I am motivated by competition and I always want to out perform everyone else in the room.

The days I plan on doing Spin are on Wednesdays (which was previously an off day) and friday (which is a hamstring dominant leg day). Do you think this would be alright? I have a friend that does spin classes on these days and I would like to attend with them, that is my reason for picking those days. Do you think there are any problems with that?

Dude, if you like what you see in the mirror and you feel good then you appologize to NOBODY! You do what works for YOU. From what you just said you've got your head on straight so don't let anybody try to change what you're doing.

As far as Spinning, I used to teach it so I can give you a somewhat informed opinion. A good rule of thumb when the objective is to burn fat is to do your anerobic exercise first and then a session of aerobics. (Lift then cardio) The lifting puts your body into a fat burning mode and the cardio extends the time your body is in that mode. What I'd do in your case is hit the Spinner right after your two leg workouts. (Assuming your schedule allows that.) This will absolutely fry your legs AND stoke the fat burning fire into an inferno.
