    Eating after workout.

What happens if I don't eat immediately after a workout?
Everyone always tells me how important it is.

Someone told me that I will lose 50% of my workout if I don't eat within 45minutes after I finish lifting.
I find that hard to believe.

your dick will shrink 300 percents.

your body partitions nutrients better following a workout I hear, also, a meal can lower muscle catabolism and increase muscle anabolism.

somebody will have a better answer than that.

I like a protein shake after workout. I usually do Periworkout shake of about 70 grams of protein I sip a little before and during. I try to Keep a third for after the workout. Then I try to eat something solid after about an hour after that. This doesnt happen all the time. I don't sweat it. The whole 50% of a workout loss is crap.

Not my words but from one of my coaches. He said to eat a proper meal 45min-1hr after you take a post workout drink (which was supposed to be taken right after workout). Meal should be even mix of protein and carbs. Pretty much for the reasons Fish mentioned Most of it made sense to me...But i don't think youll loose 50%, seems like a myth.

Thats just scare tactics used to make sure your team or trainee gets the importance of eating solid after a workout.

Yeah I figured that was a myth. I do eat immediately after a workout. I just don't really undertstand what happens if we decide to not eat or to just go to bed after a workout.

What happens is you've taxed the muscle. If you don't feed it to aid in repair it starts to break down and your body goes into a catabolic state in order to find healthy protein to use to repair the protein you damaged, I.E. you start digesting yourself. .....in a nutshell.

    Simple.

yes what Merk said. you keep breaking down muscle even after to stop working out. after having a protein shake my muscles feel less tired, and i begin to get my energy back soon afterwards. its probably the nutrients rushing into your muscles.

Damn. I'm glad I eat right after my workout. Lots of my friends don't though.

Merkaba is right and is exactly what I do. I also avoid starting my workouts on an empty stomach (I workout in the morning). I grab just a couple spoonfuls of a protein/carb mix I make before working out and also down at least a liter of water after I wake up. Then I drink about 1/3 of my protein shake every 20 minutes (in a roughly 60 minute weight training day).

well here is an interesting scenario.. what if you ate enough during the day, worked out and then went to bed, not eating anything till breakfast 10 hrs later? Would your body be catabolic or would your muscles be able to feed off what was supplied pre-workout?

Yeah I want to know too. Cause I have come home from a workout, then went right to bed by accident and didn't eat until the morning.

Fair enought. Let me give it a go.

Food digestion does take time, depending on the food you have ingested. So say you had your last meal an hour before training and nothing after. You would still have some of the nutrients from this meal and meals earlier in the day flowing around you system, and these can be used for growth and repair.

However much of these nutrients consumed before your workout will be used for energy during the workout. When lifting you deplet the glycogen stores in you muscle and cause micro-trauma to the muscle fibres and connective tissue, these require carbs and proteins in order to refill and repair. This is why you need to eat after a workout.

Now I made just have made this up, but I remember reading somewhere that you partition calories better for a short time after lifting.

Built, P-funk, Gaz, Merk?? This sound about right?

Hi you should eat after workout. This is the most important meal.Your muscles recover and need lots of carbs and protein to replenish losses.Good idea is to mix some liquid carbs with water and take on gym and drink after workout. You see big pump to your muscle.

    Good input...

Also why do you think its so special that you can give someone a great body in 24mins a day? A lot of people here could do the same.

I wouldn't even be able to fall asleep if I tried to go to bed without eating after a work out... I can't fall asleep if I'm hungry...
