    Muscle + low bf% = 'toned'

technically, there are ways to harden muscle.
But i am sure what the OP was talking about was just simply lowering body fat.

I could do with hardening my muscle actually.

I didnt say you couldnt. But by toning people normally think of high rep training, as they are trying to 'tone' the muscle, not build it. This is incorrect.

T-man, you want to get lean: low rep(I stick in the 4-6 regio, others go up to 8, find out whats best for you), heavy lifting, reduced volume, calorie deficit. When you really start to lean out you may need some cardio to help shift that last bit of fat.

agreed... I just wasnt sure what exactly he meant... the confusion probably stem from the fact that toning doesnt exist!

A muscle is generally softer or harder because of the amount of fat on top of it.

when we gain body fat not only do we gain subcutaneous fat (under the skin), but we also gain fat inside the muscle, i.e. intra muscular fat or marbling, look at a fatty steak.

when we get lean/cut we lose the subcutaneous fat as well as the intramuscular fat, that is why if you measure an arm of a weightlifter or bodybuilder that is at 15-20% bf, even though there may not be any subcutaneous fat visible on the arm, the muscle is marbled, once they get lean/cut their arm will shrink, not to mention once a bodybuilder hits the stage and they have "dried out' or lost water weight, the muscles ares 60-70% water.
