your friend is right, you need to lift big to get big. you gain muscle by creating little rips in its tissue, you do that by working so hard your muscle barely holds itself together. go to fatigue (until you can't lift it at all no matter how friggin hard you try) with about the second heaviest thing you can lift, and each workout try and do an extra rep for each set, and go from 4 sets down to 3. don't just do it with bench press, do it for everything. i'm saying all this assuming you want to get as huge as possible.
