How to raise the good stuff

any help is greatly appreciated. Got blood work today and the doc says my "good" cholesterol is low - he says it's not that bad, cause the "bad" cholesterol is also low. His recommendation was to raise it with exercise - for some reason he didn't believe that I train 5-6 days a week!

anyhow - are there any proven dietary methods for raising the good stuff?
    Thank you

i have read that maintaining a very low carbohydrate diet increases the size of LDL particles which is a good thing. However, it will increase your number because IIRC, the number is based on weight.

I have read that allicin, fish oil, coconut oil, coq10, and grassfed saturated fats etc. are good for achieving and maintaining an optimal cholesterol ratio

The only things that have been proven to raise hdl is long, slow endurance exercise and drugs like niacin.

Thanks for all the info guys - much appreciated! I've been talking to doctors, and it seems that nobody has a guaranteed medical solution - so I'm going to up my healthy fats, and up the boring treadmill walks... thanks again

Just an fyi, if you're running gear or just came off it will crush your hdl for most guys. My last run it dropped mine from 30-17. And, some people, especially men have a genetic predisposition to low hdl. I probably do way more cardio than anyone on here and I eat good and I can't get mine above 35.

The important part is to keep your ratio good, keep the ldl low and the hdl as high as possible for a good ratio, and then keep all your other risk factors in check. these would be bp, weight, smoking, cardio exercise, stress and diabetes.

I take 1000 mgs of Niacin before bed. It's OTC and very cheap. Don't get the "no flush" Niacin though. It doesn't work.

I am on a keto diet (1 healthy carb up a week which I'm cutting out now to see if it makes a difference) and I take fish/mct/primose/cla oils, and I eat the healthful fatty fish.

this is misleading, you want to keep the vldl low. if you have high ldl and very low triglycerides, it means that your ldl particles are large and are not dangerous IIRC

Here are the recommendations from the ncep (national cholesterol education program)

They don't even mention vldl in their recommendations and they're the authority on cholesterol management.

This is from the Cleveland clinic. Those of us in the field of cardiology know that this is considered the premiere cardiac hospital in the US. They have referenced good studies outlining the benefits of reducing your LDL.
