    Nutrition before sports

Should I eat right before playing basketball? If so, what types of food? Drink lots of water before and during?

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Other than that, I'd just make sure you have a proper carb intake beforehand. I wouldn't eat too soon before playing, no less than an hour. You definitely don't want to eat right before playing or during, the stress from hard exercise will just have that food lay static in your GI tract which could make you feel sick.

Ideally, you will want to play through without having to eat or drink anything, however that usually can't be the case especially on hot weather. Bring a water bottle or some gatorade type drink for carb replacement if you need it.

    Just simple stuff.

Eat an hour to hour and a half before sports. Clean carbs like pasta are essential. DO NOT EAT FAT. Fat will make you sluggish and might make you throw up. To avoid cramps eat bananas. I play soccer so bananas are a perfect pregame meal.

Bananas are good as they can replenish lost potassium and provide carbs. I'd say fibrous carbs are better, brown rice or oatmeal 1.5-2hours before game time and plenty of water throughout the day, and only sip water during the game.
