Although we don't believe in timing the market or panicking over market movements, we do like to keep an eye on big changes -- just in case they're material to our investing thesis.

Expect a positive start to the stock market today, as the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI ) gained 25 points in premarket trading this morning. The U.S Senate is expected this afternoon to confirm Janet Yellen as the new Federal Reserve chair. Yellen will take over the central bank's top spot from Ben Bernanke, who has held the position for the last eight stormy years. Meanwhile, news is breaking this morning on a few stocks that could see heavy trading in the session, including JPMorgan Chase (NYSE: JPM ) , Jos. A. Bank (NASDAQ: JOSB ) , and Ford (NYSE: F ) .

JPMorgan will pay $2 billion to settle a criminal investigation into its role in the Bernie Madoff Ponzi scheme, according to reports this morning in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal. That price tag will bring the total amount that the bank has paid out to settle government investigations this past year to a whopping $20 billion. Notably, JP Morgan will again avoid a criminal indictment this week, but will still be slapped with what's called a "differed prosecution agreement," a first for a U.S. bank. JPMorgan's stock is unchanged in premarket trading.

Stock Market Today: JPMorgan Chase Escapes Criminal Indictment (^DJI, F, JOSB, JPM, MW)

Damn jp morgan chase crooks for decades...

Get investigated by the gov for their dealings in bernie madoff scheme and just pay a 2 billion dollar fine, they're getting off cheap!

After that Nazi handed his friends mega, mega cash for nothing, I left that bank! Because they said they had remorse and wanted to show their clientele some loyalty, and they were giving me 0.001 interest on my money!

Those fucking crooks couldn't even pay 1% interest! Couldn't even pay out .o1% interest!?

Considering that they are co-owners of the FED they will always be able to do as they please and pay miniscule fines when caught. The world would be a better place if the global financial sector was decreased by 50%.

Yup!

What a farce, that isn't even a slap on the wrist, cause they're just going to pay with other peoples money.

Always allowed to buy their way out for pennies on the dollar. This country needs to take a page from Iceland's book and prosecute.
