ESPN - Text of Belichick's apology - NFL

Good thing they have that pick from the 49's still :p

Overall, I think it's a fair punishment. I'm happy BB wasn't suspended. They are totally blowing this WAY out of proportion. Yes, BB cheated, but what coach doesn't?

The draft pic hurts, but I actually think the Pats got off easy. I'm sure the Pats will pick up that 500k tab for Belichick

Mike Shanahan:
"Our guy keeps a pair of binoculars on their signal-callers every game," says Broncos coach Mike Shanahan. "With any luck, we have their defensive signals figured out by halftime. Sometimes, by the end of the first quarter."

Dolphins:
The incident spawned considerable attention on Tuesday after some Dolphins players suggested to the Palm Beach (Fla.) Post that the team "purchased" tapes of the New England offense that provided audio of quarterback Tom Brady making audible and line-blocking calls.

Those players strongly hinted that the tapes were critical in preparing for the game and provided the Dolphins inside information about New England's offensive audible system.

"I've never seen [Brady] so flustered," middle linebacker Zach Thomas said.

The league's response? Pretty much a stifled yawn, since there is no rule prohibiting such film study.

"Reaction around the league office was, 'That's football,' " AFC spokesman Steve Alic said.

The point is everyone is doing it in some way. People can use binoculars and lip read, but the Pats recorded and had audio. Pretty thin line if you ask me. I obviously don't condone cheating, but it makes you think if staff can already steal signals in some way, how big of a deal is it to record them? Shanahan was saying they can steal signals and figure them out by the end of the 1st quarter.

The difference is that it is against the rules to videotape the opposing coaches. There is no rule against watching the opposing coaches.

And BB should have been suspended too.

exactly. Belichick knew he was breaking the rules when he used high-tech video equipment to steal the signs.

Double standard?

I think the Patriots and Bill Belichick got off lucky.
What Roger Goodell did in penalizing Belichick was significant, but he did not ban Belichick from coaching for even a week for repeatedly cheating -- after being warned 12 months ago to not videotape other teams' coaches signaling in plays from the sidelines.
When Dallas assistant coach Wade Wilson got suspended five games and fined $100,000 this month for using the banned substance HGH to treat impotency, Goodell told him coaches have to be held to a higher standard.

That was a really pathetic article.

The one about the eagles. They are pathetic.

Give me a fucking break. Are all the teams who lost to the Patriots going to look back and say .. "well, they were a little fishy here" .. and "i think they cheated here" .. they all need to shut the fuck up. Bunch of whiny little babies who can't admit that they were outplayed, out coached and outmatched.

We're never going to hear the end of it for the rest of this season. I hope it will fire the Patriots up and prove everyone wrong that they are still the best in the league.

That's what happens when your on top all the time, sore losers never give champions the credit.

My only problem is that with all the talent from players to coaches why would they need to cheat?

2007 season
On September 10, a Patriots video assistant was caught by NFL security filming the New York Jets' defensive signals. Jets coach Eric Mangini, a former Patriots assistant, tipped off league officials that the Patriots might have been filming their signals. After the game, the Jets formally complained to the league.

Two days later, Belichick issued a statement "to apologize to everyone who has been affected," and also cited he spoke with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell about Belichick's "interpretation of the rule[4]."

On September 13, Belichick was officially fined $500,000 USD--the the biggest fine ever imposed on a coach in the league's 77-year history,[5] and the maximum permitted under league rules. The Patriots were also fined $250,000. Additionally, the Patriots will forfeit their first round draft pick in the 2008 NFL Draft if they make the playoffs. If the Patriots do not make the playoffs, they will forfeit their second and third round selections in the 2008 draft. He said that he fined the Patriots as a team because Belichick is effectively the team's general manager as well as head coach, and exercises so much control over the Patriots' on-field operations that "his actions and decisions are properly attributed to the club."[6]

According to ESPN's John Clayton, many of Belichick's colleagues felt he should have been forced to sit out one or two games.[7] Goodell seriously considered suspending Belichick, but decided not to do so because he felt that the loss of one or more draft picks "is in fact more significant and long-lasting, and therefore more effective, than a suspension." With most NFL experts picking the Patriots to run away with their fifth consecutive AFC East title (and sixth in the last seven years}, they may become the first team in NFL history to forfeit a first-round pick.[8]

Belichick issued a statement in which he apologized for what he called a "mistake" in his interpretation of the rules. However, he denied ever using videotape to gain an advantage while a game was underway.[9]

Cheaters may they rot in hell

This whole thing is pathetic. So from what I'm reading, it's LEGAL to steal signals with binoculars, lip reading and from the box but ILLEGAL to do the same with a video camera. :wtf:

Oh yeah, the Pats are such big cheaters.

OMG how can they ever live with themselves. They used a video camera instead of binoculars  For shame........

.......

Here's the difference since you can't figure it out yourself.

If it's recorded on tape, it can be played over and over. Every movement, every little nuance can be observed REPEATEDLY.

If someone is just watching, they get ONE CHANCE to observe everything. If something is missed, it's gone.

If the taping had been done by some other team against NE and NE wound up losing the game, how many of you Pats fans would be having the same reaction?

I don't think the punishment was suitable, so they give up the 32nd pick in the draft, big woop. I think he probably should have been suspended for 1 game, but it should be against the Jets since that is the team they cheated against, but not against the Chargers whom they play on Sunday. :)

As for the Eagles, your organization sucks. You blitz on every play, it's not too hard to pick that up when you don't play in the Junior Varisty league (i.e., The NFC).

I don't understand this post. You basically just repeated everything that's been the top headline on ESPN for the past week. So uhhhh like...no shit :gosh:

Shanahan in the past admitted to being able to sometimes steal the signals by the end of the 1st quarter. From what I've read, Pats wouldn't have been able to use the signals they acquired from the camera man until after halftime.

For all those who think the Pats are tainted because of this...how'd we give up a 21-0 lead against the Colts in the AFC Ship?

Ahhh.......ok, do you really think I'm that dumb? :hmmm:

I know the difference but no matter how you look at it's still stealing signals. Stealing is stealing. So it's ok if I overlook your shoulder when you are writing your SSN down and use it for future use but if I have a camera NOW THAT IS STEALING  Stealing is stealing no matter how you look at it.

A video camera of signals is good for how many games? Not many because as with any other team, they should be changing their signals on a regular basis.

So again, I still don't see the difference. Lying is lying and stealing is stealing. There is no legal way of stealing. This whole thing is a joke.

As for the last part, the tape was not used during the game. The Pat's won fair and square. So yeah, the Jets still suck.

I think what they did was wrong and was very upset because I always thought my favorite team was better than this. They were wrong but I think everyone is blowing this out of proportion much larger than it should be because everyone is stealing signals.

This was a great night! It was a big FUCK YOU to all the haters out there :D
