Americans are paying in many cases well under half the price of any other country. Are they that poor that they can't pay the 75cents a liter? Everywhere else pays over 1.20$ a liter. Gas prices hit us hard because we are so rural. If I remember correctly the average American travels 45 minutes one way for work. Keep in mind there is NO mass transit, so that's per vehicle.

I don't think as much, but im not positive. When I visit Canada it appears most people live in the cities (Toronto, Windsor, Montreal). Just in Michigan for example Detroit has 800,000 residence or so, but the surrounding counties have an additional 4 million.

I commute 90 miles each way to college. My wife took a damn good job that we couldn't pass up so we relocated. Instead of changing colleges which would have set me back an extra year I decided to just commute. Sucks but in less than 8 months ill be done. My average drive after that will be 5 miles each way(might pull out the 10 speed).
