What I'm now seeing in the middle of this media is the portraying of a man of muslim descent who for whatever reason was allowed to stay active in the military after denouncing American Ideals of combating ANTI AMERICAN terrorism at home and abroad. And the reason he backlashed at his community wasnt because he just didnt want to go to war for fear of his life, or having to leave his homeland, but rather because he denounced our efforts and commitments to help bring the savage islamists to an end or at least try and save a country or two in the process. If this was just a joe shmoe american man who feared leaving for war for no other reasons, I dont think I would have an argument, but in this case, evidence popping up is clearly showing that this guy was a little bit more than just a "rotten egg" in the military.

i'm not arguing that it just seems simple that anyone that vocally opposed for whatever reason need to be seen as unfit. i don't think his beliefs caused him to do this but being forced to act against them. it's not like he kept all these beliefs, thoughts and feelings bottled up and then came unglued. this was avoidable and a lesson should be taken from it. what i've read seems like the military said we own you, we don't give a fuck what you believe and you will do as you're told. he painted a clear picture before the fact that he wasn't suited to serving in our military.

As an athiest and a physician I am always amazed by how many mentally ill people resort to religion as their tool for self destruction or coping. This guy used islamic religion, that does not incriminate the peaceful islam I know any more than Eric Rudolf or Timothy Mc Viegh incriminates peaceful christianity. Like you, I don't think the religion forced his hand, but religion is a powerful tool that people use to solve problems unfortunately. However, it does sound like the military may have mishandeled him, but then, the military seems to mishandle a lot of things.

The Army psychiatrist suspected of killing 13 people at Fort Hood reportedly warned senior Army physicians in 2007 that the military should allow Muslim soldiers to be released as conscientious objectors instead of fighting in wars to avoid "adverse events."

According to The Washington Post, Major Nidal Malik Hasan was supposed to make a presentation on a medical topic during his senior year as a psychiatric resident at Walter Reed Medical Center.

Instead, Hasan lectured his supervisors and two dozen mental health staff members on Islam, homicide bombings and threats the military could encounter from Muslims conflicted about fighting against other Muslims in Iraq and Afghanistan.

A source who attended the presentation told the paper, "It was really strange. The senior doctors looked really upset."

The Powerpoint, entitled, "The Koranic World View As It Relates to Muslims in the U.S. Military," consisted of 50 slides, according to a copy obtained by the Post.

"It's getting harder and harder for Muslims in the service to morally justify being in a military that seems constantly engaged against fellow Muslims," Hasan said in the presentation.

Under a slide titled "Comments," he wrote: "If Muslim groups can convince Muslims that they are fighting for God against injustices of the 'infidels'; ie: enemies of Islam, then Muslims can become a potent adversary ie: suicide bombing, etc." [sic]

The last bullet point on that page reads simply: "We love death more then [sic] you love life!"

On the final slide, labeled "Recommendation," Hasan wrote: "Department of Defense should allow Muslims [sic] Soldiers the option of being released as 'Conscientious objectors' to increase troop morale and decrease adverse events."

An Army spokesman told the Post Monday night he was unaware of the presentation, and a Walter Reed spokesman declined comment.

A classmate of Hasan, meanwhile, told FoxNews.com that the warning signs were all there ??? the justification of homicide bombings; spewing anti-American hatred; efforts to reach out to Al Qaeda ??? but that the military treated Hasan with kid gloves, even after giving him a poor performance review.

my heart breaks for any parent reading this who lost a child to this mans actions. he should have been discharged.

How do we know he just thought our attempts at subverting radical Islam through violence was futile because he knew the people better than we do. How do we know somewhere deep in his brain his subconscious was telling him, open fire on American troops and watch how angry and hateful people get, show them the other side of the coin..... But I'm not buying any of this Government propaganda, how convenient is it that several days later it's revealed he had contacted a radical Muslim cleric and some alphabet agency knew about it all along....sounds like a bunch of bs in an attempt to rekindle a dying fire of rage for support of the war....

Taiping Rebellion in my home country was started and led by an errant Protestant missionary convert. Our history books cite it as one of the worst examples of religious warfare and it happens to be christian based. unfortunately, this horrifying religious civil war was used by Mao as a tool for brainwashing the chinese against religion and solidifying communism. ( By the way if you ever wonder why the chinese are so paranoid about missionaries, then you need to only read up on this pivotal conflict in chinese history)

Thanks, i came to this country beginning of high school and I was taking an AP history class where my teacher was talking about religious warfare, the protestant catholic conflict, crusades etc. and when I mentioned the Taiping Rebellion he said I was lying. It was very embaressing.

i don't think it was terrorism at all. i think it was the final desperate act of a man that made it very clear he did not want to go to war and was being forced to go anyway. it is exactly why many feel the draft is potentially dangerous.

Holy shit on a shingle.

I am also against the draft. Forcing someone to fight who doesn't want to is a bad idea.

That said, the draft is not in place. This man was not drafted, this man joined a 100% volunteer military. He reaped the benifits of being a soldier, but then decided that he didn't want to go fight...and he should have been discharged?! No, he should have been court-martialed for cowardice and conduct unbecoming. You don't get to sit in the Army getting all the perks of being a soldier, then decide you don't want to fight when the call goes out.

It doesn't work that way.

And using the excuse that he is muslim and should have been allowed to leave the military instead of fighting against muslim forces....I hate to breakit to anyone, but conflict in the Middle East is nothing new, and I dare say ANY soldier in ANY country stands a pretty good chance of heading over there to fight at some point. He knew this when he joined.

Again, the man is a coward and I hope he hangs for what he did to our soldiers.

he should have been court-martialed for cowardice and conduct unbecoming.

i don't disagree. he should have been flagged as unfit to serve. it was beyond obvious.
