Olympic Doping Scandal Over Chinese Swimmer Grows

Sports scientists doubt Chinese teen swimmer Ye Shiwen could have improved
her performance so dramatically without enhancing drugs.

THE GIST

  • 16-year-old Ye Shiwen clocked a faster time in the water than the male world
record holder at the same distance, the U.S.'s Ryan Lochte.
  • Ye has passed her drug test.
  • Doping tech is changing all the time and experts say a negative test doesn't
    mean much.

The London Olympics first doping scandal continues to grow as some sports
scientist expressed doubts about the performance of 16-year-old Chinese swimmer
Ye Shiwen, who clocked a faster time in the water than the male world record
holder at the same distance.

On Tuesday, Olympic officials said that Ye had passed her drug test.

"We would only comment if we had any adverse finding," International Olympic
Committee spokesman Mark Adams told Reuters on Tuesday. "I am not commenting, so
you can draw your own conclusions."

Despite the test results, some sports scientists say Ye?s performance on
Saturday in the 400-meter Individual Medley is suspicious.

For one, she swam the final 50 meters of the freestyle leg in 28.93 seconds.
That was faster Ryan Lochte, an American swimmer who won the men?s event. During
the breaststroke leg, Ye had been trailing American Elizabeth Beisel before
unleashing a devastating final kick that was faster than both Lochte and Michael
Phelps, who finished fourth in the men?s medley. Her time on Saturday was also
seven seconds faster than her own previous best time in the 400 IM last
year.

"That's a massive improvement for a
developing athlete," said Jonathan Dugas, adjunct professor of exercise
physiology at Loyola University in Chicago and co-founder of the blog The Science of Sports.

Athletes competing at elite levels are capable of a kick finish at the end of
a grueling endurance race like the 400 IM, but to achieve her winning time,
Dugas said Ye would have had to be holding back an enormous reserve of energy
during the first 300 meters. She would also have had to maintain that reserve
while keeping up with the leaders of the race.

"The differences in the athletes at that level are very small," Dugas said.
"To suggest she was much slower and then sped up so much at the end, it goes
against everything that we know about how athletes pace themselves at that
level."

The other bit of circumstantial evidence comes from the history of doping in
the Chinese swimming program. Most occurred during the 1990s. But more recently,
16-year-old swimmer Li Zhesi, who broke a world record in the 400-meter
individual medley at the 2009 World Games, tested positive for a banned hormone
in March, according to Xinhua.

"If you put that together with her pacing and that she matched or had gone
better than a male counterpart, the evidence stacks up against her," Dugas
said.

Chinese officials are furious, saying critics of Ye are being unfair and
perhaps racist to an athlete who has won two gold medals this week (she won the
gold in the 200 IM on Monday) through hard work and years of training.

Xu Qi, head of the Chinese swimming team, told the Xinhua news agency that Ye
?has been seen as a genius since she was young, and her performance vindicates
that.?

?If there are suspicions, then please lay them out using facts and data.
Don't use your own suspicions to knock down others. This shows lack of respect
for athletes and for Chinese swimming."

What about the test that Ye passed? Another expert says there are ways to get
around it by knowing in advance when the testing is done, by using masking
agents that hide the presence of performance enhancing drugs, or by taking new
substances for which sports authorities haven?t yet developed screening
tests.

American sprinters Marion Jones won five track and field golds at the 2000
Sydney Olympics , passed all her tests, but later confessed in 2007 that she had
been taking a previously unknown synthetic steroid.

?If you understand in detail exactly how the tests are done and you have a
good enough chemist, there are ways to get around it,? said Thomas Brenna,
professor of biomedical physiology at Cornell University. ?But they are not easy
and require a significant amount of sophistication.?

To catch cheaters, the World Anti-Doping Association conducts tests at the
London Olympics that can pickup 240 different chemical compounds that are banned
by international rules. Officials are also relying on an athlete?s ?biological
passport,? which monitors blood levels over time. It?s a way of checking whether
the effects of a performance enhancing drug has had an effect in the body by
increasing red blood cell counts, even if the substance itself can?t be
detected.

The IOC is also keeping blood samples of Olympic athletes on ice for eight
years to re-check them as screens for new drugs are developed. In 2009, these
retroactive tests caught five Olympic medalists with the new blood-boosting drug
CERA.

?Unfortunately, the negative test doesn?t mean a lot these days,? Dugan said.
?People have beat the system plenty of times before.?

Any one else want some of wht this chick is pinning?

YAWN.

China is a world superpower that will only continue to catch up to the U.S. in terms of GDP, so obviously American media outlets are going to propagandize against Chinese swimmers and claim they're all taking steroids. It's just another way for them to discredit a rival country while further solidifying the idea that AAS are the un-American devil's drugs. It's all been done before. It's the same reason Rocky IV showed Russian scientists shooting steroids into Ivan Drago before the big fight with our grand ol' American hero. The narrative dictates steroids are evil, and anyone associated with them is equally evil. So why not claim the girl is "doping"? May as well.

they should allow athelets to do whatever they like. you know most are on something win or lose. its only when they win that we question what got them there.

What part of that chinese girl says that steriods are evil. all it indicates it cheating. I personally would prefer all athelets used what ever they could get their hands on cause that would be amazing to watch. People literally pushing the limits of human potential. Though as the rules stand its cheating. And that chick stayed with the best female swimmers in the world on the first 300 meters of a race (which is a long race by the way) and then broke out at the end of her race swimming a faster split than the male world record holder HAAHHAHA. I have a hard time believing that was achievable with out help.

Well the propaganda is right, because everyone is doping in the Olympics. Too much on the line

let's face it
you can't stand in that level without dope

American Swim Coach Accuses Chinese Swimmer of Doping

John Leonard, a top American swimming coach and the current executive director of the World Swimming Coaches Association, did everything he could to suggest that a new 16-year old swimming sensation from China was guilty of doping with banned performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Chinese swimmer Ye Shewin won the gold medal in the 400-meter individual medley (in a world record time) and the 200-meter individual medley at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Her performances shocked the world.

Many people still harbor suspicions about the performances of China?s swim team given their history of positive steroid tests in the 1990s. Yet Leonard was the only major swimming official to publicly voice skepticism about Shewin at the London Olympics in the absence of any evidence of doping.

China came out of nowhere in the early nineties to dominate the world of swimming. The female swim team set numerous world records before several steroid scandals decimated their team and subsequent performances. Twenty-eight Chinese swimmers tested positive for either steroids or other PEDs between 1990 and 1998. This accounted for approximately half of all positive doping tests in the sport during this period.

Leonard never mentioned anabolic steroids, human growth hormone or any specific banned substance by name. But Leonard didn?t miss an opportunity to compare the Chinese swimmer?s performance to that of former East German swimmers (who were systematically administered anabolic steroids and other drugs) and to Irish swimmer Michelle Smith (who was accused of using steroids after she was caught tampering with a urine sample).

?The one thing I will say is that history in our sport will tell you that every time we see something, and I will put quotation marks around this, ?unbelievable?, history shows us that it turns out later on there was doping involved. That last 100m was reminiscent of some old East German swimmers, for people who have been around a while. It was reminiscent of the 400m individual medley by a young Irish woman in Atlanta.?

Leonard said that not only did Shewin?s performance arouse his suspicion but her physical appearance did as well. He described her physique as that of a ?superwoman? and suggested that any woman who manifests such a physique will ultimately be found to have used PEDs such as steroids.
Chinese swimming officials were understandably furious at Leonard?s irresponsible comments. Olympic officials and other major swimming officials defended the Chinese swimmer.

Good read. Would like to hear some input on this. I didn't catch this on TV so I never saw her physique, but who knows!

god see everyting

PED's and steroids can only do so much to enhance performance in world class athletes. You still have to have the talent, do the work and have proper nutrition.

phelps takes all those gold medals. everybody sais go america, a chinese girl beats a record gets 2 gold medals and shes doping give me a fucking break.

Well the propaganda is right, because everyone is doping in the Olympics. Too much on the line

The point is when Michael Phelps ripped everyone a new asshole in Beijing, all the media wanted to talk about was how he ate 100,000 calories for breakfast, trained for 100 hours a day, and possessed the natural anatomical structure of an enormous fish-human hybrid. Now a non-American is doing the same shit Phelps did, and all they want to talk about is how she's clearly a cheater who was genetically engineered in a lab, injected full of drugs, and probably hates capitalism almost as much as she despises Jesus.

This is a load of propagandized horseshit, and the fact that anyone is buying this garbage just indicates how much the media has us wrapped around their exploitative little finger.

I think it had more to do with her, a 16 year old girl, beating the times of lochte, the fastest male swimmer in these Olympics.

Oh stop it, if she were a white girl from Florida, Congress would be designating a new federal holiday named after her. The word "doping" wouldn't even be on our minds as we all put our hands across our heart and praised the greatness of America.

If a white girl from Florida was swimming faster than the fastest male swimmer in the world, I would question wether or not she was jutting.

This is all a moot point tho as all of these athletes are using some sort of ped.

If you're not cheating, you're not trying and its only cheating if you get caught.
