And again, a study in which epidemiologists monitor supplement users and non-users for several years shows that supplementation with glucosamine and chondroitin significantly reduces the risk of premature death. This one comes from Dana King and Jun Xiang of West Virginia University.Study

The researchers used data from 16,686 Americans who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Examination in 1999-2010. 685 of them used glucosamine and/or chondroitin. Results
In the period that the researchers were able to follow the study participants, a total of 20 percent of them died.

The main cause of death was cardiovascular disease. Of every 5 study participants who died, one died as a result of cardiovascular disease.
The main predictor of mortality was age. When the researchers brushed away this factor, and all other factors, using statistical techniques, they found that taking glucosamine or chondroitin supplements reduced the risk of death from all possible causes of death by 27 percent.

Even more convincing was the effect of glucosamine or chondroitin on cardiovascular mortality. This decreased by 58 percent.
Conclusion
"Regular consumption of glucosamine/chondroitin seems to be significantly associated with lower overall and cardiovascular mortality", King and Xiang write. "Given the strength of the association, a 27 percent lower likelihood of overall mortality and a 58 percent lower likelihood of cardiovascular death, prospective studies may be warranted."
